12th annual Off the Leash Luncheon set for Nov. 4

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies men’s hockey program has long been considered one of the most respected hockey organizations in the country. That’s due in large part to their success on the ice, but also because of the continued growth and financial support “Dog Hockey” receives from alumni, fans and Saskatchewan’s business community.

The 12th annual Off The Leash Luncheon (OTLL) sponsored by Wright Construction and Western Sales along with the Huskie Hockey Alumni, is an opportunity for everyone to support the program but also enjoy an afternoon of food and entertainment. This year’s event features Huskies head coach Mike Babcock, former NHL player and Stanley Cup champion Patrick Sharp along with host comedian Kelly Taylor.

“It was only fitting to have head coach Mike Babcock come and support the program and it was important we get his exposure to the community outside of his coaching position,” said OTLL chair Kyle Bortis.

Babcock, has volunteered to coach the men’s team for the 2021-22 season, accepting no pay. He grew up in Saskatoon and was at one point, a Huskie defenceman. He had a stellar 17-year career behind the bench with NHL teams in Anaheim, Detroit, and Toronto – winning the Stanley Cup with the Red Wings in 2008.

Patrick Sharp was born in Winnipeg and was drafted by Philadelphia in 2001. The left winger performed in the NHL for 15 years from 2002 to 2018 with the Flyers, Chicago and Dallas. In 939 regular season games, he tallied 287 goals and 333 assists for 620 points and 536 penalty minutes.

“The combination of these three guys is going to be great entertainment. Expect lots of good laughs and interesting stories,” said OTLL cofounder and committee member Shannon Briske.

Doors open at Prairieland Park on Thursday, Nov. 4 at 11 a.m. with the program beginning at 11:30. Tickets for the OTLL are available online or by emailing ticketsOTLL@gmail.com.

In light of recent provincial health guidelines, the event will require proof of COVID vaccination or proof of a negative test to attend in person. A live stream option may be offered if current capacity regulations change.
