HuskieFAN makes big impressions first week after launch

Within six days, nearly 5,000 unique users viewed HuskieFAN.ca.

The new website launched by Pattison Media and the University of Saskatchewan last week is a digital hub providing news and information, scores, features and more on all Huskie Athletics.

There were also 8,317 page views on the website within the first week. Analytics from the site’s Facebook page show 35,922 people were reached and 11,240 of them watched videos from the site and those numbers continue to climb quickly. The steadily growing HuskieFAN Twitter account saw 9,160 impressions (the number of times the tweet has appeared on a timeline) alone on Sept. 15.

The proof of the sites popularity is justification not needed by Ben Gareau. The owner and general manager of Advantage Collision is a long-time Huskie fan and knew the focused attention on USports would garner a lot of followers.

“I’ve been watching the Huskies since the ‘80’s, so obviously I like Huskie sports and university sports in general and there is a lot of exciting stuff happening,” Gareau said. “The profile of university hockey has changed over the years. It’s still a pathway to the NHL possibly. It’s very good hockey and very competitive and there’s so much excitement with our new coach Mike Babcock. And women’s hockey – I understand it’s the first time women’s university hockey is being presented by a private broadcaster in Saskatchewan and Canada, so it’s kind of historic to be a part of that, right?”

Gareau is adding his name to that history by providing sponsorship for HuskieFAN coverage through his business.

“We sponsor the ‘Huskie Advantage Collision Man Advantage’ for the men’s hockey and we’re just as excited to have the ‘Huskie Advantage Collision Player Advantage’ for women’s hockey,” Gareau said.

Also adding their support to HuskieFAN is Sask Lotteries. In an email to HuskieFAN.ca, Sask Lotteries spokesperson Dan Yates said they are proud to celebrate and promote amateur sport and HuskieFAN is another way they can do that.

“The HuskieFAN website and app are putting a spotlight on outstanding athletes and programs at the University of Saskatchewan, while also providing Sask Lotteries with an opportunity to remind the community about the benefits of Saskatchewan’s lottery-funded system for sport, culture and recreation.”

The Sask Lotteries fundraiser benefits more than 12,000 sport, culture and recreation groups in the province every year, including the Huskies, through the sale of LOTTO MAX, LOTTO 649 and other lottery products.

The Huskies football team, along with the men’s and women’s hockey teams will have all their games broadcast on the new HuskieFAN app during the 2021-22 season. Football games will also be heard on The Beach Radio 750 – a strong AM signal that will deliver every play across Saskatchewan. All games will be stored in a podcast library so fans have access on demand.

“What I like about it is it’s a concentration of Huskie sports, so if I’m looking for Huskie sports, it is my go-to place. If you’re a fan of the Huskies, this is where you can get your news,” Gareau said.

In addition to the football and hockey play-by-play the site features stories on all sports including basketball, soccer, track and field, cross-country, volleyball and wrestling, feature articles and podcasts, and links to game schedules and tickets.
