Daniella Ponticelli is no stranger to the airwaves in Saskatchewan. She’s currently a morning anchor on Global News Regina but has garnered fans in other broadcast circles as a host for Saskatchewan Rush lacrosse and even national level roller derby. Now the avid sports fan will lend her smooth delivery to hockey play-by-play for the Huskies women’s hockey team and in doing so, become a part of history. Pattison Media will be the first private broadcaster in Canada to commit to broadcasting a full season of women’s hockey with an all-female crew.

“To come in this season [as play-by-play announcer] is something special, not only because of the partnership with HuskieFAN and the University of Saskatchewan, but coming off a pandemic year where there was no season…I think the stories need to be told now more than ever when people are hungry for more sports and this is a great way to continue the momentum we’re seeing for that passion for women’s hockey and women’s sports,” Ponticelli said.

She’ll be joined by Katie Brickman-Young, a communications advisor and former journalist, who also shares a passion for athletics. Ponticelli said their goal is to bring the fans at home, into the rink with an energetic delivery of some high calibre hockey along with some insight on what goes on behind the scenes.

“I love that part of it. Every athlete has their own personal stories about what they do and I want to amplify those with features from players and coaches. I’m really excited to hear from head coach Steve Kook who is such a great positive force,” Ponticelli said. “How amazing is it when you can take these people who you read about on a website or hear from on the radio but then really be able to go through some moments with them is going to be awesome. With me travelling with the team, hopefully I’ll have some fun stories to share.”

What she really appreciates is how Huskie Athletics works to keep all of their programs, men’s and women’s at the forefront.

“They’re investing in a way that makes me proud to be connected with them,” she said. “To know that we’re only just beginning HuskieFAN and about to create something really special is amazing.”

Not one to shy away from her fans, Ponticelli invited HuskieFAN followers to engage in conversation with her on social media post games.

The women’s team plays their first regular season game Oct. 22 in Regina. You can catch all the action with Ponticelli and Brickman-Young through the HuskieFAN app.
