Adam Machart contributes with 221 yards in offense, and 2 TD’s for Huskies
The U of S Huskies took the lead 36 seconds into the game and didn’t give it up, on their way to a 54-27 win over the Alberta Golden Bears on Saturday afternoon at Griffiths Stadium. Running back Adam Machart opened the scoring on a 68 yard run on the first play from scrimmage. Machart was dominant on the ground and through the air. The fourth-year running back had 132 yards in rushing, 89 yards in receiving and two touchdowns. It’s the kind of performance that Huskies Head Coach Scott Flory is used to seeing out of his feature tailback. “That’s just the player he is, and the (offensive) line was doing great.” Machart helped the Huskies to a 25-3 second-quarter lead when he scored on a 39-yard pass and run play.
First-year receiver Rhett Vavra, from Swift Current, had a home debut to remember. Vavra hauled in a 24-yard pass from Huskies quarterback Mason Nyhus in the third quarter, as the home side opened up a 36-13 lead. Fourth-year pass-catcher Sam Baker also hauled in a TD toss from Nyhus in the third quarter. Nyhus finished the game with 385 yards in passing, 4 touchdowns and one interception.
In the fourth quarter, the Huskies’ special teams unit contributed. Defensive back Logan Bitz pounced on a loose ball in the end zone after the Golden Bears’ special teams unit misplayed a kickoff. Defensively Nick Wiebe had a sack and a forced fumble for the Huskies, while Lane Novak had an interception.
Golden Bears starting quarterback Luke Hornung, a first-year university pivot from Regina Miller, was 6 for 19 for 73 yards in passing. Third-year quarterback Brad Launhardt didn’t see action until the fourth quarter but was the most effective of the Alberta quarterbacks, throwing for 133 yards and a touchdown.
