The University of Saskatchewan (USask) Huskies women’s hockey team opened their season with a road victory.

A late individual effort by third year forward Kennedy Brown sealed the Huskies 3-2 win over the University of Regina Cougars at The Co-operators Centre in Regina on Friday evening.

“It feels really good – it’s been a long time since we played in any games, so it was nice as a team to get that first win under our belts,” said Brown.

Kate Ball got the Huskies on the board early in the first period and Kara Kondrat put them up by two late in the opening frame.

Regina’s Makena Kushniruk got the Cougars on the board in the middle frame and Ireland Sorestad scored a power play marker late in the second period to tie it up going into the third period.

With the score tied with six minutes left in regulation, Brown took a pass in the neutral zone, pushed wide of the goal, and jammed the puck past Cougars’ goaltender Katie Crowther, who stopped 19 shots in the loss.

“We played well off the hop and that was good to see. We knew there would be a lot of emotions and intensity and we just needed to control that,” said Steve Kook, head coach of the women’s team. “I thought we did really good in the first and settled in the second. The ice was tilted in the second in their favour.”

Camryn Drever finished with 32 saves for the Huskies in the win.

USask went 0-for-7 on the powerplay, while the Cougars scored one on their four advantages.

“We got into some penalty trouble, but our kill did very well,” said Kook. “The powerplay didn’t do so well, but good teams find ways to get chances and that’s what we did in third.”

The Huskies will host the Cougars for the second half of the back-to-back series on Saturday evening at Merlis Belsher Place for the team’s home opener.

“It’s been a long time since we’ve had a home opener, so it will be exciting to see the fans and be back on our home ice,” said Brown. “We want to go into the second game with the energy that we ended the first game with. We finished with the win, so we want to come out with another win. We wan to bring that same energy.”
