The U of S Huskies and U of R Rams football teams had to contend with a cold southern wind in their only meeting of the season on October 23rd at Griffiths Stadium. A wind, which at times gusted up to 50 kilometres an hour, gave quarterbacks, kickers, and kick returners fits.

The Huskies prevailed 28-17, thanks in part to two big second half touchdowns. With the score tied at 10 in the third quarter, Mason Nyhus connected with Colton Klassen on a six yard touchdown strike. Then with the score tied at 17, the Huskies took a fourth quarter lead when Nyhus hit Sam Baker on a 16 yard TD pass.

Nyhus fought through the wind to have a strong day throwing for 301 yards and three touchdowns. Klassen put some impressive numbers up as well, making 8 catches for 135 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Josh Donnelly, the regular Rams starter, didn’t make the trip to Saskatoon. Sawyer Buettner made his first start of the season and struggled against the Huskies’ defense. Charlie Ringland, Nathan Cherry and Riley Pickett all registered sacks for the home side. Buettner was 8 of 18 for 54 yards and didn’t start the third quarter. Bryden O’Flaherty, a second year quarterback from Calgary, was 7 for 13 for 55 yards and did throw a touchdown pass to D’Sean Mimbs.

In other Canada West Football action on Saturday the UBC Thunderbirds defeated the Manitoba Bisons 26-24. The T-Birds moved to 2 and 2 on the season, while the Bisons join the Huskies at 3 and 1. Saskatchewan visits Manitoba, in a battle for first place, on Saturday October 30th at IG Field.

The Rams, who fell to 1 and 3 with the loss, visit the Alberta Golden Bears on October 30th.
