The University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s hockey team kicked off their season with two victories.

The Huskies defeated the University of Regina Cougars on back-to-back nights, wrapping up with a 3-2 victory on Saturday evening at Merlis Belsher Place in Saskatoon.

“I thought it was a pretty solid game for us,” said Steve Kook, head coach of the women’s hockey team. “I didn’t think we managed the puck well in our first game, but I thought we did tonight.”

The Huskies started off strong with a goal by Jasper Desmarais early in the first period, her first of the season.

Camryn Drever, Huskies goaltender wasn’t tested often in the opening frame, only facing seven shots. Her biggest test was on a penalty shot with 40 seconds left in the period, when Cougars forward Lauren Focht was interfered with in close. Drever made the pad save to keep the Huskies up by one heading into the intermission.

“You could definitely feel the tension out there with the provincial rivalry,” said Drever.

Sophie Lalor notched her first of the season, on the power play, with a point shot that got past a screened Cougars goaltender, Arden Kliewer, to put the Huskies up by a pair of goals early in the second period.

“Our PP is a work in progress. Early in the season, you would like to have all those things humming and all those things clicking, but they have to understand that it is a five-person unit and not an individual opportunity,” said Kook. “Sometimes when you get five skilled individuals out there, the tendency is to do it yourself. That’s what we are trying to work on and get that unit to click a little bit.”

The Huskies would add to their lead when forward Jordyn Holmes scored mid-way through the second frame, giving the home team a 3-0 advantage.

It was a strong defensive frame for the Huskies, who stymied the Cougars to just five shots on goal.

“The team really helped me out and I’m happy with our performance this weekend,” said Drever.

The Cougars got on the board only eight seconds into the third period when Jordan Kulbida scored on a broken play.

The breakdown by the Huskies continued, not even a minute later when the Huskies took a penalty and put the Cougars on the advantage.

Cougars captain Ireland Sorestad made quick work on the power play, scoring in close on Drever and bringing them within one of the Huskies.

“Less those 45 seconds, I thought we played a solid game throughout,” said Kook. “It was good for our young players to see that and have to fight through the last 19 minutes of the game to come out with a victory. We hesitated for two or three minutes there, but I thought the last minute of the game was a good growing point for our kids as they were put in a trusted position and did well.”

The Huskies open their season with back-to-back victories over the Cougars and will look to continue their winning ways when they face off against University of Manitoba Bisons on October 29 at Merlis Belsher Place.

“They are a really good club and coached well. They are solid from the goaltending out and they have put a lot of goals on the scoresheet,” said Kook. “Knowing how they play with the style and structure they have; we are going to have to be real good defensively.”
