The University of Saskatchewan Huskies men’s hockey team now gears up for week two of the 2021-22 season after an unusual week one. Following the 3-2 Friday home opener against the Regina Cougars, the Huskies learned early Saturday that the second game of that series, slated for Regina, was cancelled because of a Covid-19 issue with the Cougars. Huskies head coach Mike Babcock is making the best of it. “We’ve built in a couple of buffer weekends” Babcock said on Tuesday. “The good thing is, we can head down on a Tuesday night and get this game on the schedule.”

The Huskies visit the Manitoba Bisons on the October 29, 30 weekend. Babcock was asked for his observations from the Huskies’ one goal win over the Cougars on October 23rd at Merlis Belsher Place. “You can’t have any success, being undisciplined.” The Cougars had six power play opportunities in the hockey game but did not register a power play goal. “Going to the box and saying you’re right, doesn’t make you right, it makes you dumb.” said Babcock.

The Huskies had to dig out from a one goal third period deficit on Friday. While Babcock admits that his team didn’t execute with the puck, there were some players that stood out. “I thought Roddy Ross made some good saves.” Ross, who is from Meadow Lake, made faced 19 Cougar shots in his season debut in goal for the Huskies. Zane Franklin, a first year forward from Marwayne, Alberta, was the Friday night hero, scoring the game winner with 4:38 remaining in the third period. While Franklin only had one point, Babcock pointed out that he was in on two goals. “Franklin makes plays.”

The “Hockey Dogs” leave for Winnipeg on Thursday, for the Friday/Saturday games in Manitoba capital. The Huskies faced the Bisons once in non-conference play on September 25th. The Huskies won that game 3-1. Manitoba has a win, two losses, and an overtime loss so far this season. Babcock’s scouting report is straight forward. “They’re going to check. They’re going to be above you. They’re going make you work. They’re going to frustrate you. If you don’t want to work, they’re going to drive you crazy. If we want to work, we’re going to have our opportunities.”
