Huskie men’s hockey team win weird and wacky one in Winnipeg
The University of Saskatchewan Huskies men’s hockey advanced to 2-0 in their young USports Canada West season, but it was far from routine or ordinary. The Huskies outlasted the University of Manitoba Bisons 4-3 on Friday night at the Wayne Fleming Arena in a game that featured fluky goals and strange deflections.
The Huskies looked to be in control of the game in the first period, after they took a 2-0 lead on eerily similar goals in the first 10 minutes. Donovan Neuls scored just 11 seconds into the game, and Carter Folk followed that up midway through the frame. Both flew down the left wing to the circle and beat Bisons goaltender Jeremy Link low on the ice, on the glove side.
The Bisons were able to battle back late in the frame with a pair of weird ones. On the power play, a point shot deflected off Huskie defenceman Evan Fiala’s stick, and sunk underneath the glove of goaltender Roddy Ross and stuck in the crease. Tony Apetagon snuck behind Ross to put it in and get the Bisons on the board.
They would tie the game in the final minute of play in the opening frame, after Ross couldn’t freeze a bouncing puck. Brett Davis was right there to put it in to tie the game up after the first.
