WHKY: Huskies host Bisons in weekend series

It will be a hometown showdown for University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s hockey as they host the University of Manitoba Bisons this weekend.

The Huskies come into Friday’s game with a 2-0 record, after sweeping a home-and-home against rival Regina Cougars. Both games ended 3-2 in regulation.

Meanwhile, the 3-1 Bisons look to bounce back after splitting a two-game series on the road against the UBC Thunderbirds last weekend. The Bisons lost 5-1 Saturday, after a 3-2 win last Friday.

Speaking to HuskieFAN after last weekend’s games, Huskies head coach Steve Kook said the Bisons are a strong, well-coached team.

“They’re just solid, right from the goaltending out. They’ve been putting a lot of goals up on the scoresheet,” Kook said, referencing the Bisons’ 15 goals in four games, all in regulation.

“Just knowing how they play, the style and the structure that they have, we’re going to have to be really good defensively,” he said.

The Huskies are six-for-eight on the penalty kill, but haven’t been able to take advantage of the power play. The team went just one-for-12 on the man advantage, with third-year forward Sophie Lalor notching the lone PP goal.

“It’s a work in progress,” Kook said. “They have to understand they have to play a five-person unit, rather than individuals.”

The Huskies six goals over the first two games came from six players, scored in order by Kate Ball, Kara Kondrat and Kennedy Brown in game one, with Jasper Desmarais, Sophie Lalor (PP) and Jordyn Holmes hitting the back of the net in game two.

Assistant captain Brown and first-year Mallory Dyer each got two assists over the series.

Brown was named the female Canada West player of the week for her performance.

Huskies goaltender Camryn Drever played full minutes during opening weekend, making 50 saves in the series.

Huskies and Bisons faceoff at Merlis Belsher Place in Saskatoon Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 5 p.m. Listen to the game broadcast on the HuskieFan app, or at HuskieFAN.ca.
