WHKY: Huskies lose to Bisons in OT

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s hockey team let one slip away.

The Huskies lost 1-0 in overtime to the University of Manitoba Bisons on Friday night at Merlis Belsher Place in Saskatoon.

“I thought we skated well tonight, and I thought we moved the puck well, but I don’t think we accomplished much,” said Steve Kook, women’s hockey head coach. “We let one slip away. We aren’t too worried about losing the point, but we don’t want to get into continuous games where we are beating ourselves.”

The Huskies outshot the Bisons 34-16, but Kook didn’t think his team had many high-stake opportunities offensively.

“The shots weren’t indicative of how well Manitoba played. Out of the 15 shots they got, I think 14 of them were quality ones,” said Kook. “It’s like when you go to work and you work all day, but when you look at your list of things to do, you haven’t got much done. That’s what it felt like.”

A lot of the shots by the Huskies were along the perimeter of the offensive zone. While they kept Bisons’ goaltender Erin Fargey busy, there wasn’t a lot of difficult saves she had to make.

“I think we had a bit more offensive time, but we didn’t make good use of it, said Kook. “They did a good job of keeping us to the outside.”

Third-year forward Sophie Lalor echoed her coach’s thoughts on their possession time as they struggled when it mattered most – leaving a zero on the scoreboard.

“I think we had some good offensive chances and controlled the puck, but we didn’t capitalize on our opportunities,” said Lalor. “There isn’t much we can do it we can’t score.”

The Bisons scored the game-winner with just 29 seconds left in the extra frame. Two players collided at centre ice just off the face-off, and Bisons forward Halle Edwards pulled Huskies goaltender Carmyn Drever out of position, sliding the puck under her pad to seal the Bisons fourth victory this season.

“That goal was no fault on Cam at all,” said Lalor. “That was a miscommunication on the draw and we ended up hanging her (Drever) out to dry, which is unfortunate because she had a stellar game. That one is on us.”

Miscommunication has been an issue early on for the Huskies and it’s something the team is working on to start the season.

“It is still early for us. Steve has been pushing the system hard and we’ve been practicing a lot, but it takes time,” said Lalor. “We have a lot of rookies, and it takes time to learn the systems, but those slip ups are what is going to make us learn in the future and we will move forward from there.”

The Huskies continue to struggle on the powerplay, going 0-for-5 on the advantage on Friday night. They have only scored one goal on 17 opportunities so far this season.

“We’ve been trying to keep it simple. We are working on it. I think it will come,” said Lalor. “It’s been frustrating for us because we know we’ve been on the outside and haven’t been getting into the middle. I know it will come.”

The Huskies and Bisons will face off in a rematch on Saturday afternoon (5 p.m., Merlis Belsher Place), and hope for a different outcome.

“I think we did the fundamentals tonight, but I think we need to capitalize on our opportunities, get to the middle and play our game,” said Lalor. “We can’t worry too much of what they are doing, which is something we get caught up in – watching their system and thinking about what they are going to do. We just need to stick to our game plan.”
