Depth, defence lead Huskies to 31-23 win to close regular season

The Huskies football team put its depth on display in a 31-23 win over the Calgary Dinos at Griffiths Stadium on Saturday.

The Huskies rested feature running back Adam Machart and receiver Colton Klassen, but still generated offence against a Dinos team that needed to win to stay in the Canada West playoff hunt.

First year running back Ryker Frank scored on a 58 yard run in the first quarter to tie the game at 7-7.

Frank, who played his high school football at Regina LeBoldus, finished the day with 11 carries for 134 yards.

Huskies head coach Scott Flory had a handful of players who benefitted from extended playing time because of the roster changes.

“If they are on our football team, and in a jersey, we trust them,” Flory said.

The Huskies’ leading rusher on the day was Josh Ewanchyna who had 15 carries for 137 yards.

Third-year receiver Daniel Perry scored two big touchdowns to help the Huskies obtain, then maintain the lead.

With the score 16-10 Dinos, in the final minute of the second quarter, Perry hauled in a 24-yard pass from quarterback Mason Nyhus as the Huskies jumped out front 17-16. Then, early in the third quarter, the Nyhus to Perry connection struck for a 29 yard touchdown as the Huskies took a 24-16 lead.

When asked about his deep roster, Flory said it’s “just part of what we have been preaching. It’s next man up.”

Saskatchewan’s defence was dominant on the line of scrimmage, particularly in the second half. The Huskies registered eight sacks on the day.

Nick Wiebe and Nathan Cherry had two sacks each. Fourth-year defensive lineman Carson Bell also had a big day with four tackles and 1.5 sacks.

“They’re just so physical and strong. They have the ability to take over a football game,” said Flory when asked about his defensive line.

The Huskies’ special teams unit put a touchdown on the board in the fourth quarter when Seth Hundeby blocked a Vince Triumbari punt at the Dinos’ goal line. Linebacker Clovis Lumeka recovered the football in the end zone to put the game out of reach.

The Dinos loss, combined with UBC’s 30-27 win over Alberta, means the Thunderbirds will visit the Huskies on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 1 pm in the Canada West semi-finals.

The Huskies defeated the T-Birds 43-15 in week two of the regular season.

The Hardy semi-final will be broadcast live on the HuskieFAN app, and HuskieFAN.ca.

The other game on Saturday, Nov. 6, saw Manitoba defeat Regina 22-3. The Bisons host the Golden Bears in the other conference semi-final.
