University of Saskatchewan Huskies men’s hockey remain perfect on the season after a 6-2 road win over the rival University of Regina Cougars Friday night.

Regina’s Tate Coughlin opened scoring with an assist by Michael Eskra 6:22 into the first period. Huskies answered back with an unassisted goal by Dawon Holt to end the period 1-1.

Jaxan Kaluski made it 2-1 Huskies early in the second frame assisted by Tate Olson and Jared Dmytriw.

Ty Prefontaine followed, scoring two goals in the second on his only two shots on the night for the Huskies. Those efforts sandwiched the Cougars second and final goal of the night, a power play marker by Conner Chaulk.

Entering the third period with a 4-2 lead, the Huskies finished with two more goals, both short-handed, from Justin Ball and Carter Falk respectively.

Connor Hobbs lead the night on assists for Saskatchewan with three, Holt and Donovan Neuls each clocking two.

Friday’s re-scheduled matchup at the Co-operator’s Arena in Regina completed a two-game sweep of the rivalry series from opening weekend.

The game, originally set for Oct. 23, was postponed due to COVID protocols on the Cougars roster.

Huskies men’s hockey next host the Trinity Western University Spartans (0-4-0) for their first-ever meeting in U Sports at Merlis Belsher Place on Friday, Nov. 12, and Saturday, Nov. 13.

Puck drops at 7 p.m. both nights, with game broadcasts on the HuskieFAN app.

Double Overtime Heartbreak for Women’s Team

Huskies women’s hockey took their first meeting against the Trinity Western University Spartans into double overtime at the George Preston Recreation Centre in Langley, B.C.

First-year Colby Wilson got the start in net, making 31 saves in her U Sports debut. Spartans’ netminder Jadeyn Kastning also recording 31 saves on the night.

Both teams remained scoreless through regulation and a 4-on-4 five-minute sudden death overtime.

However, in what should have been a 3-on-3 second five-minute overtime, the Huskies found themselves in penalty trouble.

With two Saskatchewan players in the box, adjusting for U Sports 3-on-3 rules, the Spartans’ advantage played out 5-on-3.

At 1:38 into double overtime, on a power play, Neisha Germann made history for Trinity Western—scoring the game winner and recording the first U Sports and Canada West victory for the Spartans.

It was also the first time Trinity Western women’s hockey held a team scoreless in U Sports and Canada West history. The Spartans are now 1-4-0 on the season.

Huskies women’s hockey fall to 2-3-0 on the season, and are 1-1-0 on the road.

Game two between the Huskies and Spartans goes Saturday 2 p.m. CST at the Langley Events Centre. HuskieFAN will have the call live on the HuskieFAN app.
