Big crowd could play a role in big win for Huskies

One non-conference meeting, one conference meeting, and now a Hardy Cup meeting. The Manitoba Bisons and Saskatchewan Huskies will meet for the third time this season on Saturday (Nov 20), with the Canada West title on the line. Kick off is at 1pm.

The Huskies defeated Manitoba 31-14 on September 18th at Griffiths Stadium in an exhibition match up. On October 30th the Huskies rolled over the Bisons 41-12 at IG Field, in a game where Manitoba had to use its third string quarterback Sawyer Thiessen. Now the teams meet again with the winner claiming the conference championship.

First year quarterback Jackson Tachinski (Manitoba’s second string quarterback behind the injured Des Catelier) led the Bisons to a 43-17 win over Alberta in last weekend’s Canada West semi-final. IG Field was snow covered and slippery for that football game. Huskies head coach Scott Flory admitted it was tough to get a good scouting report from the tape of that game, but does know about Tachinski and the Bisons offense. “It’s nothing flashy” Flory said. “It’s not boom, or bust. They run the ball effectively, but it’s not a massive part of what they do.” Because of the winter like conditions in Winnipeg on November 14th, the Bisons won with just 72 yards in passing. Manitoba rushed the ball for 275 yards.

The Bisons don’t have spectacular passing statistics. Macho Bockru is 14th in league receiving with 280 yards in six games, while Gavin Cobb is 15th with 241. Tachinski is last among starting quarterbacks in yards passing. Despite those numbers, Flory says there are legitimate comparisons between the two teams. They’re a spread 5R based offense. They’ve got speed sweeps, they’ve got a quick game, they’ve got vertical shots.”

While the Huskies capped off a six game season with a five game win streak, Manitoba lost two of its last three before defeating Regina in their final regular season game to secure second spot in the standings.

Defensively, the Bisons are led by 5th year lineman Brock Gowanlock, who finished the regular season with 2.5 sacks and 2 fumble recoveries this season, along with fourth year defensive back Stefan Conway. Flory is hoping the diversity of his offense continues. The Huskies have been known as a running team with Adam Machart in the backfield, however in Saturday’s 39-17 win over UBC, Machart had just 47 yards in rushing. Sam Baker had 148 yards in receiving and a touchdown, while Daniel Perry had a 143 yards in receiving and a TD. Flory said winning individual match ups on both sides of the ball will be key. “We just want to boil it down to one to one’s. If we can do that (win those battles) on a consistent basis, we’ve got a good chance at success”.

The Huskies have not hosted a Hardy Cup since 2009, and Flory suggested a “13th man” could play a role in the outcome as well. “I hope we have a great crowd, and the community gets behind it. Get together, huddle up!”
