Huskies look for roaring return to home ice hosting Dinos

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s hockey team is ready to move past breaking even, with back-to-back home weekends ahead.

The Huskies came out with a 3-3 season record after splitting a road series against Trinity Western University in Langley, B.C. two weeks ago.

On Wednesday, Huskies head coach Steve Kook said the team benefitted from some rest during reading week.

“We really hadn’t had much time off since training camp the third week of August,” Kook said. “It was a good break physically for them, and at the same time it was a good break mentally.”

He said players were just coming off mid-terms before the big trip out west, which included flights and bus rides along with loading and unloading gear a total of 15 times.

“In itself, that’s not a big deal. But everything you do has a chance to take your focus off of what you’re there for,” he said. “The benefit of us being home for the next two weekends is we get into a routine that we’re used to, we get an extra day of training. When we travel we lose a full day.”

The Huskies host the University of Calgary Dinos at Merlis Belsher Place on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. The Dinos come into the weekend with an overall record of 6-9, sitting at 3-6 on conference play.

The weekend after, the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds (4-2) pay a visit to Saskatoon.

“Both Calgary and B.C. have played well. I don’t think they’ve gotten the results that they wanted—same as us,” Kook said. “As a result, we’ve got three teams that are pretty much in the same spot in standings. So it’s going to be important for us to get points out of this weekend.”

Huskies goaltender Camryn Drever notched her first shutout of the season the last time the team played in Langley, B.C.

“It’s just focusing on one period, one play, one shift at a time. It’s a big weekend for the team, but we are ready,” she said.

As of last update, the University of Manitoba Bisons sit atop the Canada West standings, with Saskatchewan, Calgary and B.C. sharing space in the middle of the pack.

The Huskies last played the Dinos on Jan. 18, 2020, with Saskatchewan winning the last 14 matchups against Calgary.
