Former teammates turned coaches to battle in UTECK Bowl matchup

Scott Flory and Anthony Calvillo played together for 15 seasons in the Canadian Football League (CFL), all with the Montreal Alouettes. Between 1999 and 2013 they won three Grey Cups together. (2002, 2009 and 2010.)

They have both been retired since 2014 and have transitioned into coaches on Canadian university football teams.

Calvillo was named as the assistant head coach for the Montreal Carabins in late 2018 and was promoted to offensive coordinator and quarterback coach this season.

Flory served as the Saskatchewan Huskies offensive coordinator from 2014 to 2016 and was then named head coach for the 2017 season and has filled that role ever since.

Now the two will square off in their respective coaching roles, when the Huskies head to Montreal this Saturday, Nov. 27 for the UTECK Bowl and a chance at reaching the national final Vanier Cup.

In an interview with HuskieFAN, Calvillo spoke about his playing days with Flory as his offensive lineman, while he played quarterback, and how he’s transitioned into the coach he is today.

“Looking from the outside in, we’re really impressed with their football team. When we look at the tape and what they’ve been able to accomplish, that’s because of Scott. He’s really got that team playing very well and it’s exciting to see.”

Calvillo also mentioned the strong relationship they still share and how he’ll always hope for the best when it comes to Flory and his team.

“You’re always going to root for somebody that you’ve played with and we’re also pretty good friends with close families, so it’s just one of those things where we get a chance to go against each other, where both teams are excellent. It’s definitely going to be a challenge.”

Calvillo said the familiarity with each other might not affect the game as much as people may think, simply because of the different roles these two hold.

“I’m just the offensive coordinator here and Marco is our coach and we all come together under his guidance, whereas on the other side, Scott is the head coach and offensive coordinator and everything that he has learned over his years, whether it’s been playing or coaching the past few years, he’s developed into an excellent coach.”

“I think we all pick up certain things from certain coaches that can have an influence on us. If you think about it, we were influenced by the same people, here in Montreal, so we’re always going to take a little bit of this and that and make it our own. The unique thing right now is Scott is in charge and he has the ability to set the foundation for what he sees is important for his football team. Like I said, from the outside looking in, it looks like he’s done a damn good job.”

Calvillo gave a sneak peek as to what may lay ahead when it comes to bragging rights after this game; however, he was quick to point out before any of that happens, there’s still a football game that has to be played.

“That’s always the fun part, way after the fact, because believe me, whoever doesn’t come out victorious, does not want to talk about the game. They don’t want to deal with the game, but I think we’re close enough that down the road someday, somebody is going to have the upper hand. Believe me right now though, the main focus is trying to get both of our teams ready to compete and it’s going to come down to the matchups.”

Scott Flory also spoke fondly about his relationship with Calvillo, but said once that clock starts ticking, ‘there are no friends on the football field.’

“It will be good to see him, we spent a lot of time together, 15 years, a lot of family dinners and suppers, with extended family. Greek Easter was a thing every year at his in-laws and all that kind of stuff, so obviously it’s going to be good to see him again. That’s about where it ends though because we’re going to try and win a football game,” Flory said.

Some extra news for Calvillo is that he recently became a Canadian citizen, which was posted on the Montreal Alouettes Twitter account.

The Huskies play the Carabins at 2 p.m. You can listen to the game live through the free HuskieFAN app.
