Huskies travel to face Carabins
The Huskies have touched down in Montreal for Saturday’s Uteck Bowl. The host Carabins, who finished the RSEQ regular season with a 7 and 1 record, and defeated Laval 28-19 in the Dunsmore Cup, hope that home field advantage weighs in their favour. Montreal lost in its home opener by three points to Concordia on September 10th, but the Huskies know that the Carabins are still formidable at CEPSUM Stadium. “We’re in their back yard” said head coach Scott Flory. “It’s going to be loud. It’s going to be hostile”.
The Carabins are led by quarterback Jonathan Senecal who finished fifth in the nation in passing, throwing for 255 yards per game in the 2021 regular season. (Huskies quarterback Mason Nyhus finished third at 275.5.) Senecal signed a letter of intent to play at UCONN after the 2019 season, but with the cancellation of the 2020 campaign because of the pandemic, Senecal decided to return home. Flory said “(Senecal) throws the ball well. He’s athletic. He’s a good player.”
Like the Huskies, the Carabins have a powerful ground attack. Bertrand Beaulieu was third in the USports football with a 7.5 yards per carry average. At 6’2” and 230 pounds, Beaulieu can punish defenders, but the Huskies are up for the challenge. “They’re physical” said Flory. “We don’t mind that.”
While the Carabins are the favourites, the Huskies know the task at hand. “We will have success if we play our brand of football” Flory continued. “Eliminate all distractions, get in our own little bubble, and play physical football.”
