A defensive battle played out in Calgary Friday night as the University of Saskatchewan Huskies faced the top-ranked team in Canada West.

With just one goal on the night, coming on a first-period power play, the Mount Royal University Cougars took game one of the weekend 1-0.

“We played well. Actually I thought that was one of our better games,” said Huskies head coach Steve Kook after the loss.

“We both took our swings. We had some real good net-front presence, which we talked about, and a couple chances there we just couldn’t get a stick on.”

Cougars goaltender Zoe De Beauville made 25 saves on the night for the shutout, while Huskies netminder Camryn Drever made 27 saves.

The two goaltenders, entering the weekend ranked second and third respectively in Canada West, earned the players of the game.

“I was not displeased with anyone on the roster tonight,” said Kook.

“Cam (Drever) played well. We just need a bounce. We just need a little bit of a crack in the goalie’s armour.”

The Huskies weren’t without power play chances, going 0-5 on the player advantage. Meanwhile, they were 1-4 on the penalty kill, with an outstanding show of effort staving off overlapping penalties deep into the second period.

Mount Royal’s lone goal of the night came off a power play at 11:12 into the opening frame. Cougars’ captain Tatum Amy snuck one in past Drever with assists by Emma Bergesen and Breanne Trotter.

Kook said one of the things coaching staff stressed post-game was seeing the weekend as a six-period game.

“I told the crew, ‘stay in this thing. We had a good first three periods, let’s finish off the next three’,” he said.

Mount Royal keeps its spot atop the Canada West with the win, improving their season record to 8-3. Saskatchewan’s record drops to 6-5.

The Huskies have a shot at splitting the series Saturday night at the Flames Community Arenas. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. Saskatchewan time.
