Huskies women’s hockey season resumes with rivalry series against Regina

The final stretch of the 2021-22 regular season kicks off at home with a rivalry weekend for University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s hockey.

“We have to attack the second half and try to move up in position as much as we can. We would like to be able to host a playoff game,” said Huskies head coach Steve Kook.

Only eight games remain for the fifth-ranked Huskies in the regular season. First and second ranked teams in Canada West each get a bye into a semifinal played at home. Third and fourth ranked teams host a quarter-final.

The road up the rankings starts with the Huskies hosting the University of Regina Cougars for a home-and-home series at Merlis Belsher Place Friday at 7 p.m.

Huskie Athletics announced Monday the Jan. 14 and 15 home hockey and volleyball games will be played without spectators in attendance, due to COVID-19 precautions.

Fans also won’t be allowed to watch the rematch Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Co-Operator’s Arena in Regina. All Huskies women’s hockey games are broadcast live and free on the HuskieFAN app and at huskiefan.ca.

Kook said the team has to spend more time in the offensive zone, which would also help out starting netminder Camryn Drever — who starts 2022 with the best save percentage in Canada West.

“We’re holding our own, due in large part to Cam, so we need to give her some run support,” he said.

The Huskies start 2022 with 14 points following six wins, four losses and two overtime losses. The team is 4-3 at home, and 2-3 away.

Regina is currently ranked seventh in Canada West with four wins, six losses and two overtime losses on the season.

The Cougars are tied at 10 points with Grant MacEwan University, which the Huskies will face in Edmonton on Jan. 22 and 23.

The Huskies swept the Cougars in a home-and-home to open the 2021-22 season.

COVID protocol

The Huskies last played in a weekend series against the No. 1 ranked Mount Royal University in Calgary on Dec. 3 and 4. Those Cougars shut out Saskatchewan to close 2021.

The team resumed its regular practice schedule on Dec. 29, along with rapid testing at least twice a week.

Fourteen Huskies players have since gone through COVID-19 protocol. Rapid testing will be conducted again Thursday.

“We’re just trying to catch cases as quickly as we can,” Kook said.

“Fortunately for us, none of (the cases) were really severe, which is probably a benefit of us being at least double-vaxxed, and many of us triple.”

On the injury front, rookie defenceman Emily Holmes has recovered fully from a wrist fracture that forced her to miss four games before the Christmas break.

Second-year forward Kate Ball will also return after clearing concussion protocol.
