The University of Saskatchewan Huskies served redemption on the road with a 6-0 shutout of the University of Regina Cougars Saturday night.

Huskies goaltender Colby Wilson made 30 saves for her second shutout of the season. The first-year netminder has only allowed one goal, in overtime, in her three starts.

The win in Regina ends a four-game losing skid for Saskatchewan, now ranked fourth in the Canada West standings with 16 points. The Huskies have seven wins, five losses and two overtime losses on the season.

“It was good to see some of the things we worked on post-Christmas break show up in today’s game” – Steve Kook, Huskies women’s hockey head coach

Regina, meanwhile, slid out of the post-season picture Saturday, into the seventh spot behind the University of Alberta and Grant MacEwan University — the Huskies next two opponents, respectively.

“Every game in the second half of the season is going to be important and affect standings. So the points are important,” said Huskies head coach, Steve Kook.

Despite the Co-Operators Arena being closed to the public, due to COVID-19 precautions, the Huskies showed up with the game intensity Kook said Friday was lacking.

“It was good to see some of the things we worked on post-Christmas break show up in today’s game,” he said.

“For the most part, the players kept their focus on playing the right way and I’m glad it paid off.”

The game was bookended by two power play goals, an effort that has been struggling throughout the team’s previous 12 regular season games.

Just 2:15 into the opening period, in her second game as a Huskie, rookie forward Sara Kendall scored her first U Sports career goal. Veteran defenders Meg Dyer and Isabella Pozzi recorded their second and third assists, respectively, on the power play marker.

“Happy for Kendall, she’s worked hard to get into the lineup and I’m glad she got rewarded for her work,” Kook said.

Carrying on the first-period momentum, rookie forward Mallory Dyer got a quick shot off from the left circle to beat Cougars’ goaltender Arden Kliewer.

Dyer’s second goal of the season assisted by Sophie Lalor 13:07 into the game.

Leading 2-0 into the second, rookie defender Kendra Zuchotzki unleashed her signature slapshot off an assist by Abby Shirley, her fourth of the season.

Nine minutes later, Shirley followed up that assist with a goal of her own, her fifth of the season. The Huskie’s fourth goal coming at 13:07 in the second, assisted by Paris Oleksyn, her first in U Sports.

Saskatchewan rounded out the third period with a second goal from Kendall, helped by Pozzi and Jordyn Holmes, 12:47 into the frame.

Huskies captain Bailee Bourassa secured the final goal of the night on a power play at the 15-minute mark of the third. It’s the second goal of the season for the fifth-year, assisted by Kara Kondrat and Kennedy Brown.

Kliewer, who stood tall in net for the Cougars Friday, made eight saves on the night. Regina drops to 5-9 on the season.

Up next for the Huskies (6-6) is a road trip out west to Edmonton, Alta. to face the fourth-ranked University of Alberta Golden Bears on Jan. 21 & 22.

Puck drop is at 8 p.m. CST Friday night, with a Saturday matinee at 3 p.m. CST.
