Huskies ready to face defending Canada West champions

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies head west this weekend to continue their pursuit up the rankings in women’s hockey — with a turn to face the defending Canada West champions.

The Huskies visit the University of Alberta Pandas at Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton Friday at 8 p.m. CST and Saturday at 3 p.m. CST.

While Saskatchewan has seen short streaks of wins and losses throughout the regular season, the team is coming off a 6-0 victory over the University of Regina Cougars last Saturday.

First-year goaltender Colby Wilson made 30 saves for the shutout.

“We’re hoping to carry the offensive play from that game into this weekend,” said Huskies head coach, Steve Kook.

“We had contributions from all the lines and looking back at our playing minutes by line, it was a pretty evenly shared game. Which is going to help us be successful on the road.”

Saskatchewan is currently in playoff position, ranked fourth in Canada West with seven wins, five losses and two overtime losses for 16 points.

The Pandas are just one spot behind, at fifth, with seven wins —three in overtime — and five losses for 15 points. Alberta has played two fewer games than the Huskies.

“Pandas’ strength is their consistency of play. They play a structured game, which everyone buys into,” Kook said.

The University of Alberta is the defending Canada West champions from the 2019-20 season.

The U Sports championship was ultimately cancelled due to COVID-19, along with the 2020-21 competitive season.

The Huskies practised Thursday morning at Merlis Belsher Place before travelling by bus to Edmonton. The team will not have ice time prior to game warm-ups Friday evening.

One Saskatchewan player is currently in COVID-19 protocol, and did not attend the trip.

Mount Royal University still reigns in Canada West, leading the rankings with 20 points.

The University of British Columbia and University of Manitoba fall into second and third respectively, with 18 points each.

The top six teams in the conference earn a place in the post-season, with the top four hosting either in the first or second round.
