Huskies women’s hockey made history Saturday with the program’s first-ever sweep at Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton, Alta.

The University of Saskatchewan shutout the University of Alberta Pandas 3-0 with a statement third period.

Goaltender Camryn Drever made 33 saves for her fifth U Sports career shutout. She saved 52 of 53 shots over the weekend series to add to the Huskies’ three-game win streak.

“It’s incredible. I’m really happy with how I played this weekend and I think I owe it to the team a lot too, they helped me out quite a bit,” said Drever.

What’s more, the Edmonton product got to make history with her mom and sisters watching in the stands at Clare Drake Arena.

“It’s really special, I love having them here and they’re my number one supporters, so it means a lot,” she said.

Saskatchewan trailed in shots on goal against Alberta throughout the matinee rematch, which followed a dramatic double-overtime win for the Huskies Friday night.

Still, the defensive battle continued with both teams entering the third period scoreless.

Then, on a power play 3:48 into the final frame, captain Bailee Bourassa got out on a breakaway to backhand one past Pandas goaltender Kristen Chamberlin.

“Honestly I was a little frustrated that my power play unit wasn’t really clicking. So finally I was like, ‘I’m just going to skate the puck down the ice’ and it kind of just worked out,” Bourassa said post-game.

Huskies defender Brooklyn Stevely recorded her first U Sports-career assist on the play, with Kara Kondrat notching her fourth.

But captain Bourassa was not done yet. Just two minutes later, the fifth-year forward potted her second goal of the game off a powerhouse shot from the point by Meg Dyer.

“I’ve got to give credit to Meg because she put that puck right to me and it just deflected into the net. So it was just a great effort,” said Bourassa, who now has four goals on the season.

For added insurance, Huskies’ Jasper Desmerais got one past Chamberlin off a pass from Nicole Fry, who had several goal chances herself during the game.

After Saturday’s win, head coach Steve Kook said the team did “all the little things right,” something they had talked about conquering in a challenging game two.

“I thought we battled for the puck really well and you could tell, it was a playoff-style type of game,” he said.

Both Kook and captain Bourassa see the team becoming more cohesive at a pivotal point in the season.

“This weekend we really came together as a team and going forward in this last little stretch, that’s exactly what we needed,” said Bourassa.

“The momentum is definitely building and it just feels great. I can’t even describe how good of a feeling it is in the dressing room right now.”

The win boosts Saskatchewan (9-5-2) into second-place in Canada West with 20 points.

However, British Columbia and Manitoba have room to catch up, with 18 points a piece on fewer games.

The Huskies now have the upcoming weekend off before their final home series of the regular season against the Grant MacEwan Griffins on Feb. 4 and 5 at Merlis Belsher Place.
