Wesmen defeat U of S women’s basketball team
The Winnipeg Wesmen handed the U of S Huskies’ women’s basketball team their first loss of the season on Friday night, 72-64, in the Manitoba capital.
The Wesmen, who like the Huskies entered the night with a perfect 10 and 0 record, jumped out to a 43-33 half-time lead, before rallying with a 20 point third quarter. Winnipeg had a number of key players contribute to the win. Keylyn Filewich had 18 points, while Ana Kernaghan and Faith Hezekiah had 17 points each. Carly Ahlstrom led all U of S scorers with 29 points.
The Huskies, who fell to 10 and 1 with the loss, take on the 11 and 0 Wesmen in the second game of the series on Saturday night in Winnipeg.
The U of S men’s basketball team improved to 8 and 3 with a 91-71 win over the Wesmen. The Huskies came out strong with a 33 point first quarter. Third year guard Alexander Dewar led the way for the U of S with 34 points.
