Huskies clinch first-round home-playoff berth, sit in bye week before final regular-season series

Feb 16, 2022 | 9:31 AM

With a weekend sweep over their provincial-rival Regina Cougars, the Huskies Women’s Volleyball team has punched their ticket for a host of the first-round playoffs.

After a three-set sweep on Friday night, which gave the Huskies the honour of hosting pool C in the first round of the playoffs, the Huskies continued that momentum and earned themselves back-to-back 3-0 sweeps on Saturday as well.

For Head Coach Mark Dodds, he told HuskieFAN his team is ecstatic to play in front of their home crowd, as they know how much impact the fans can have on the outcome of a game.

“We loved the atmosphere we had on Friday night, I think we had about 1,000 fans there and visiting teams really have that pressure put on them,” Dodds said. “We’re looking forward to them continuing to help us out, as we move forward and continuing to pack the PAC.”

“Especially going through this pandemic, having that year off, to having a couple of games with no fans, to now being able to host and get those extra home games, it’s pretty exciting.”

Also in that game on Saturday, Huskies fifth and final-year outside hitter, Emily Koshinsky continued to climb up the Canada West record books, as she now sits sixth all-time in career kills with 1,230. Because of her 25 kill weekend performance, Koshinsky also earned Canada West player of the week honours.

And Dodds had some strong words for his player’s performance and how it will need to continue down the stretch.

“All great teams have that great leadership and ultimately great players,” he said. “There’s no secret that we’re going to rely on her to continue to do well moving forward. She knows that and she’s up for the challenge.”

Of course, moving forward, the Huskies are currently on a bye for this week, before they have one more pair of games, again at the PAC, before the regular season concludes.

Right now the U of S sits at 12-2, Trinity Western sits at 11-1 and the University of Alberta sits at 13-1. The top two teams with the two best regular-season records that advance to the second round of the playoffs will host.

Dodds said he and his team are aware of this new Canada West playoff structure and will treat the upcoming games accordingly.

“We’re really going to treat these last games like do or die playoff games and put some extra pressure on ourselves, so far so good. Hopefully, that will prepare us for the first round of playoffs.”

“We need some help from another team to knock off one of those teams, so we know, ultimately, we just have to take care of our own business,” he said. “One game at a time, play our best volleyball and hope it falls in our favour, as we’d love to play another weekend of volleyball in front of our fans. If not, however, we’re comfortable and confident going on the road and beating any team in our league.”

The Huskies will host the 6-6 Winnipeg Wesmen, next Friday and Saturday, Feb. 25 and 26, at the PAC.
