Huskies to fight Wesmen for top spot in Canada West in final weekend of regular season

Feb 18, 2022 | 4:22 PM

Huskies women’s basketball is set to play their final two games of the regular season this weekend, against the other best team in Canada West, the Winnipeg Wesmen. On the line, the top spot in the league, as both teams currently hold records of 13-1, with each team’s loss coming to you guessed it… each other.

For Lisa Thomaidis, Head Coach of the U of S, she told HuskieFAN this matchup is perfect for her club to conclude the regular season with, as there’s nothing better to prepare yourself for the postseason than battling it out with another top team in the country.

“This is a huge weekend for us, we’re really excited to play a team like Winnipeg, one of the best teams in the country this year,” said Thomaidis. “To challenge ourselves with a highly-ranked opponent like this, right before the playoffs is really important. We want to be playing the best teams to prepare ourselves.”

And for her team, Thomaidis said that preparation is truly all that matters, as top spot is less important than just playing good basketball.

“We don’t look too much at that outcome and what it brings,” she said. “I think everyone is aware of what’s going to happen after this weekend, based on the results, but for us, it’s more about getting in a rhythm, playing solid basketball and improving from the last time we played them (Winnipeg.) Momentum leading into the playoffs is the most important thing to us right now.”

And what better place to get that momentum than in front of your home crowd.

“Anytime we get to play at home, in front of our crowd, it’s one we certainly take for granted, especially considering we didn’t get to at all last year,” she said. “I just think it’s crazy to say that we’re finishing off league play already, but here we are.”

For some players on this team, however, this isn’t just the last time they’ll be playing at home this year, but for the rest of their lives. Fifth-year players Janaya Brown, Libby Epoch and Summer Masikewich will all be honoured following Saturday night’s game at the PAC, as well as Claudia Lomba Viana and Erin Kehrig as graduating players.

“It’s a weekend that everyone looks forward to, to honour players and their careers here,” said Thomaidis. “They’ve given so much to this program, so it’s a chance to have people recognize them and show their appreciation, but also for us to thank our fans.”

For Masikewich and Epoch, this weekend also provides a chance at rewriting the record books. Masikewich is just five made free throws away from moving into second all-time in Huskies’ history and Epoch is just 16 assists shy of first all-time in franchise history.

“The individual accolades are amazing and it really shows the impact these two players have had on our program over the past five years,” said Thomaidis. “What they accomplish as a team is obviously the most important thing, but to be listed among the all-time greats among franchise history is something they’ve obviously earned and are very deserving of.”

“It shows the quality they bring every night, these two have shone since day one and have really led this team, I’m really proud of them. It’s the final time these two players will step on their home floor in a Huskies’ uniform, so we all want to play well and we obviously want to win.”

Game 1 goes tonight at the PAC, with tipoff at 6, while tomorrow’s contest will begin at the PAC at 5.
