Huskies’ volleyball to wrap up regular-season play at home, Huskies’ hockey playoff bound

Feb 23, 2022 | 3:17 PM

At home action:

WVB: The Huskies Women’s Volleyball team enters the final weekend of the regular season with a 12-2 record, good enough for third-best in the Canada West and number-eight in this week’s U SPORTS Top 10 rankings.

This weekend will serve as the final tune-up for the Huskies before the post-season as they take on the Winnipeg Wesmen.

While Saskatchewan is locked into first place in the division, there is still lots at stake for Winnipeg, who enters the weekend with a 6-8 record and are able to finish anywhere from second to fourth in the division.

A quartet of graduating players in Dani Forester, Emma Matheson, Shae Beaulieu and Emily Koshinsky, will all be honoured following this Saturday’s contest, as they suit up in their final regular-season games as Huskies.

Koshinsky continues to lead the Huskies in her fifth-and-final year with the program, as her 202 kills rank third in the conference and her 32 service aces rank second in the Canada West. Also, with 157 career service aces, which is fourth all-time in the Canada West, she is just six aces away from moving into a tie for second all-time in the conference record books.

They will play host to the opening round of the post-season at the PAC, which begins on March 5 thanks to their first-place finish in the Canada West’s East division.

Schedule: Friday, Feb. 25 vs. Winnipeg Wesmen, 6:00 p.m. at the PAC.

Saturday, Feb. 26 vs. Winnipeg Wesmen, 3:00 p.m. at the PAC.

MVB: The Huskies Men’s Volleyball team will also conclude their regular season on home court this weekend, as they’re back at the PAC for what will likely be the final time this season. Saskatchewan will be looking to improve on their record against Winnipeg, with the Wesmen coming out on top in three of the four meetings this season.

Unlike the women, however, the men have lots to still decide with just two contests remaining on the docket. They can finish anywhere from second to fourth in the East division, meaning who they will face and where they’ll play come playoff time is still to be decided.

Dylan Mortensen and Levi Olson enter the weekend tied for second in the Canada West service ace race, just one back of Brandon’s Philipp Lauter. Mortensen has been in a battle with Daniel Thiessen all season long atop conference kills and it’ll be a battle that comes down to the final weekend. Mortensen currently leads the Canada West in kills, just three ahead of Thiessen.

The men will also honour their lone graduating fifth-year players on Saturday, Matthew Primrose, as well as fellow graduates Luke Wandzura, Jeff Erickson and Nathan Seidel, ahead of their final regular-season game and likely last contest on home court.

Schedule: Friday, Feb. 25 vs. Winnipeg Wesmen, 8:00 p.m. at the PAC.

Saturday, Feb. 26 vs. Winnipeg Wesmen, 5:00 p.m. at the PAC.

MHKY: Nearly two years to the day of the 2020 Canada West Championship, the Huskies begin their quest for another conference crown.

The Huskies finished the regular season with a 13-7-0 record, good for fourth in the Canada West, which presented them the opportunity to host a playoff series at Merlis Belsher Place for the third-straight season. This series against the Calgary Dinos will be the third playoff meeting in the last four seasons between the programs with Saskatchewan winning the previous two.

The Huskies finished the regular season with four of the conference’s top ten point-getters in Zane Franklin, Jared Dmytriw, Donovan Neuls and Connor Hobbs. Franklin ended the year third in the Canada West in points with 26, which was second among rookies.

Saskatchewan has used a tandem of Jordan Kooy and Roddy Ross between the pipes over the course of the second half of the season, with Kooy seeing action in both of the Dogs’ final regular-season games.

The Huskies are looking to punch their sixth-straight ticket to the University Cup this post-season, which is scheduled to get underway on Mar. 31 at Acadia University in Wolfsville, N.S.

On the road:

WHKY: After an 11-7-2 regular season, it’s playoff time for the Huskies women’s hockey team. The Huskies will make the trek to Winnipeg for the second-consecutive matchup after what was a Bison sweep after 3-0 and 2-1 losses.

If the Huskies are able to find some success this weekend, they’ll likely need to get their power play clicking. The Dogs’ power play has struggled away from Merlis Belsher Place, only scoring on three of their 44 man-advantage opportunities on the road this season.

Huskies head coach Steve Kook will be making his 14th consecutive playoff appearance, dating back to the 2007-08 season. With a win, Saskatchewan would either travel to Calgary or Edmonton for a semifinal matchup against the Mount Royal Cougars or Alberta Pandas.

The Huskies have been led all season by fifth-year forward Baillee Bourassa, who is looking to reach her second career-national championship in what is her final post-season run as a member of the program.

The Huskies are chasing after their fourth national championship appearance in program history with this year’s rendition of the event scheduled to take place from Mar. 24-27 at the University of Prince Edward Island in Charlottetown, P.E.I.
