Huskies shut out Bisons 3-0 to sweep Canada West QF

Huskies women’s hockey took care of business with a statement 3-0 shutout win against the University of Manitoba Bisons to sweep the Canada West quarter-final series.

The team erupted in cheers at Wayne Fleming Arena before swarming goaltender Camryn Drever on the ice Saturday night.

Drever made 18 saves for her first career playoff shutout, while Bisons counterpart Kimberley Davidson recorded 35 saves on the night.

“It feels really good. I’m feeling really confident coming out of last night’s win, and I just want to build going forward,” said Drever.

“(The team) played unbelievable both games this weekend. I owe it to them for sure. They forechecked so hard and I’m just very proud of them.”

Huskies head coach Steve Kook said the team knew they would have to weather the storm that Manitoba would bring.

“I thought we did a good job of that and not getting caught on the wrong side of odd-man rushes,” said Kook.

“We had some real timely goals tonight to keep the momentum going our way.”

The University of Saskatchewan opened scoring late in the first when third-year forward Sophie Lalor got a feed from Kendra Zuchotzki in transition.

Lalor’s goal is her third against the Bisons netminder over the 2021-22 season. The Penticton, B.C. product was the lone Huskie to score against Manitoba in the regular season.

Zuchotzki and Emily Holmes recorded their second playoff assists of the series on the goal.

Early in the second, first-year defender Brooklyn Stevely finally found a way to score — finding the loose puck near the crease and getting one past an overcommitted Davidson.

“The goalie did well. It was, I swear, in and out like five times so I kind of just snuck in and it just happened to pop to me and honestly, I just hit it,” Stevely said.

“Then I fell on the ground and yeah, it was super exciting. It was amazing.”

The Regina product has been inching closer to her first U Sports career goal throughout the season. Stevely told HuskieFAN she put in the extra shooting practice to make it happen.

Seven minutes after Stevely’s celly, Huskies assistant captain Kennedy Brown scored the third and final goal with a tip-in from Larissa Bohlken off a pass by Lalor.

It was the second playoff goal of the series for Brown and the second playoff assist for first-year Bohlken.

Saskatchewan now readies to face the No.1-ranked Mount Royal University Cougars in a best-of-three series at the Flames Community Arenas in Calgary March 4-6.

The other Canada West semifinal series will see the University of Alberta Pandas travel to Vancouver to face the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds.

The Pandas swept their quarter-final series at home Saturday, also with a shutout (2-0) in Game 2, against the University of Regina Cougars.

The Canada West Championship series is slated for the following week, hosted by the higher-seeded semifinal winner.
