“She’s put in the work and put in the time.” That’s how Huskies women’s basketball coach Lisa Thomaidis describes third year guard Carly Ahlstrom. Ahlstrom, who played her high school basketball in Calgary, was in the top 10 of nearly every statistical category in Canada West women’s basketball this season. Last weekend she had a 24 point performance in the Huskies’ 10 point win over Calgary in the Canada West playoffs. That 72-62, March 6th, win over the Dinos meant that the Huskies will, again, host the Canada West Final Four on March 18th and 19th at the PAC.

Ahlstrom is being groomed for an even larger leadership role as her career with the Huskies continues. The Canada West Final Four will be last home games for three fifth year Huskies…Summer Masikewich, Libby Epoch and Janaya Brown. “They’re everything!” said Ahlstrom when asked about the contributions those graduating players have had on her career. “They are phenomenal people and players. They epitomize our culture.”

Like Ahlstrom, Masikewich also calls Calgary home. “She’s a really good sharp shooter”, Masikewich said of Ahlstrom. “She’s a threat on offense. That opens things up for other players on the floor.” Ahlstrom finished second in the conference with a 43.4 shooting percentage, and was sixth in scoring, averaging 17.1 points per game.

The Huskies, (14-2) who are the defending U Sports champions from 2020, face Lethbridge in their first game of the 2022 Canada West Final Four on Friday, March 18th, at 6pm at the PAC. “They’re a phenomenal team”, said Ahlstrom. “They are super quick. They can shoot the ball.” The Pronghorns were 10 and 6 in the Canada West regular season, and are led by 4th year guard Jessica Haenni, who averaged more than 14 point per game in the regular season.

The Huskies and Pronghorns did not meet in the shortened 2021-22 season. Despite that, Thomaidis did have a detailed Lethbridge scouting report. “They’re a veteran team. They have some quick guards who can shoot the ball and attack the rim. They’ll throw a bunch of different things at us. It’ll be a fun game to be part of.” The Huskies, who had a 14 and 2 regular season record, have won four of the last five Canada West women’s basketball championships.

The Regina Cougars (8-8) will face the Winnipeg Wesmen (14-2) in the other Canada West Final Four matchup at 8pm on Friday March 18th. The winners of the two semi-finals will meet for the 2022 Canada West championship on Saturday March 19th at 7pm at the PAC on the U of S campus.
