Huskies advance to USports national final for the first time since 2010
The 8th seeded University of Saskatchewan Huskies men’s basketball team is on its way to the USports national final. Saskatchewan was dominant in an 86-60 win over Queens in Saturday night’s semi-final at the Saville Sports Centre in Edmonton.
The 5th ranked Golden Gaels kept the game close early. The Huskies were clinging to a 21-20 lead after the first quarter. Huskies third year guard Marquavian Stephens had 10 points in the opening 10 minutes, as the teams appeared to be evenly matched.
The Huskies took control in the second quarter, thanks in part to a couple of big three point shots. Third year guard Alex Dewar nailed a big three pointer with just over 6 minutes remaining in the first half to give the Huskies a 30-24 lead. Then with 2:14 to go Fisayo Moibi hit another big shot from beyond the arc, as Saskatchewan went up 38-30. Queens was not only struggling to put up points, but were being outworked by the Huskies on the boards. Saskatchewan had an 8-2 edge in offensive rebounds in the first 20 minutes of the ball game.
Gaels coach Stephan Barry watched his team continue to be dominated in the second half. Saskatchewan outscored Queens 32-8 in the third quarter. The Golden Gaels failed to have much success from three point range, and as a result weren’t able to get back in to the contest. The Gaels were just 4 of 29 in three point attempts in the game, while Saskatchewan was 11 of 28.
