Chad Jacobson wants head coaching job

The University of Saskatchewan is searching for a new head coach for the men’s basketball program and lead assistant Chad Jacobson makes it no secret. He’s going for it. “I want to be here,” Jacobson said on Thursday. The Manitoba product, who stepped in as interim head coach during the 2022 playoffs, helped lead the Huskies all the way to the national championship game where they lost to Carleton in the 2022 USports final in Edmonton last month.

Jacobson, who has been an assistant coach at the University of Saskatchewan for eleven years, took over as interim coach when Barry Rawlyk was put on administrative leave in early March. Rawlyk, who had been the head coach since of May 2012 and with the program dating back to 2007, then resigned from the university.

The position was posted on the University of Saskatchewan’s website on Thursday, with a closing date of May 9th. “This is home for me and my family,” said the 39 year old Jacobson. “ There is obviously a process that needs to play out, that’s just part of it, but I want to be here. I don’t want to be anywhere else.”

In the meantime, it’s business as usual for Jacobson. He is working at recruiting, scheduling, fundraising and offseason training with the team. “I’m doing my job. That’s where my focus is right now. That doesn’t stop.”

Getting so close to winning a national championship, but coming up short in the national final game is something Jacobson is still wrestling with. “It still hurts, thinking about that loss. It stings, it always will.” Carleton, a USports powerhouse, defeated the Huskies 85-72 in the championship contest on April 3rd in Edmonton. The Ravens have won 10 of the last 11 W.P. McGee trophies.

What’s not lost on Jacobson is the progress that the team made as the playoffs progressed. The Huskies earned a spot in the USports Final 8 with a four point overtime win over Regina in the Canada West Final Four in Edmonton. The Huskies then defeated Brock and Queens to advance to the national championship again against Carleton. “Looking at what we were able to accomplish was pretty remarkable.” said Jacobson.

Now Jacobson works and waits as the process plays out for what is a highly coveted position.
