Over $100,000 raised for Huskie football scholarships
Memories of 2007, money for 2022. That was the theme for this year’s Dogs’ Breakfast at Prairieland Park. After a two year hiatus, because of the pandemic, the 20th annual event made its return on Thursday morning. The breakfast, attended by over 1,400 patrons, is the single largest fundraiser for scholarships for the University of Saskatchewan Huskie football team.
Guest speakers were members of the 2007 Grey Cup Champion Saskatchewan Roughrider team. Jeremy O’Day, Andy Fantuz, Tad Kornegay and Scott Schultz shared stories of the game with Master of Ceremonies Glen Suitor. Defensive back James Johnson made three interceptions in the Riders’ 23-19 win over the Bombers in what was a low scoring 95th Grey Cup game, 15 years ago.
Scott Schultz, a former defensive lineman from Moose Jaw, recalled a big play early in the third quarter. With the Riders up 10-7, John Chick sacked Winnipeg quarterback Ryan Dinwiddie. Schultz, 6-2 and nearly 300 pounds, pounced on the football deep in Winnipeg territory and simply fell on it instead of trying to score. CBC play by play announcer Mark Lee described Schultz play “as a hungry man on a cheeseburger.” Schultz admits that it’s the play that stands out most in his mind. “I thought for a second I should try scoop and score. Then I thought no, you’re going to drop it! I stuck with the smart play, because I wasn’t going to trust my athleticism in the Grey Cup.”
19 new recruits were also introduced at the breakfast for the 2022 season, including receiver Ty Flory, head coach Scott Flory’s son. Ty is a highly touted receiver from Holy Cross. (Scott) Flory, who has been the head coach since March of 2017, says the breakfast gives motivation to his team for spring camp, which runs from May 5th to 8th. “It definitely provides a different level of energy. It’s a big weekend for us…and it’s a lot of fun.”
