Huskies pursue Canada West Final Four goal in 2022
The Huskie men’s soccer team is looking forward to a full schedule of games, yet learn from the mistakes of a shortened 2021 season. The Huskies, who finished second in the Canada West standings in 2019, (prior to the pandemic) settled for a 3-5 and 2 season last year, and missed the playoffs.
“We probably underestimated how much we lost in regards to playing competitive matches”, said coach Bryce Chapman. “The guys did everything they could during Covid to stay fit and be engaged but we simply lost a lot of games. You could see that in the course of our season. We weren’t quite comfortable playing the game within the game.”
Fourth year forward Nikolas Baikas, who led the Canada West conference in shots last season, is a leader that Chapman will be leaning in 2022. “Nik is just one of the those players that has that intangible you can’t teach”, said Chapman. He’s got that little bit of instinct, that little bit of flare, that he can find a goal out of nothing.”
Another key contributor is expected to be Ekior-Dourde Mieyefa, from Saskatoon, who will enter his fourth year of eligibility. “I’m excited about EK”, said Chapman. (Mieyefa didn’t play with the Huskies last season to concentrate on his nursing studies.) “Already, during the offseason, he’s made an impact from a leadership standpoint.”
