Huskies dress 81 players for exhibition game with Manitoba
“We did what we wanted to do.” That was Huskie head coach Scott Flory’s take following a 10-9 win over the Manitoba Bisons on Thursday night in Canada West non-conference play at Griffiths Stadium. The Huskies, who had 81 players dressed for the game, scored their only touchdown in the third quarter, when Anton Amundrud hit Rhett Vavra on a 72 yard passing play a minute and a half in to the third quarter.
Both teams started to pull many veterans from the game in the second half, to give first and second year players a taste of Canada West football. Amundrud, who is in his third year of eligibility from Lloydminster, has limited playing time at the university level. He finished with 6 completions for 122 yards in the game. Defensively, second year defender Jean-Luc Ouellett had an interception for the Huskies.
Manitoba’s younger players made a game of it in the fourth quarter. The Bisons pulled to within one when Kaiden Bannon caught a 6 yard pass from first year quarterback Jordan Hanslip with 1:03 remaining. Manitoba failed on a late two point conversion in the dying seconds.
“We want to see base things”, Flory said. “We want to see us block, tackle, catch and run. I think we saw that.” Penalties can be an issue in non-conference games, but the stats sheet showed Saskatchewan take just 3 penalties for 27 yards. “It was pretty clean, and that’s pretty good. The coaches did a fantastic job of organizing the bench.”
