Huskies hammer Dinos in season opener
“What a game!” Daniel Perry’s elation said it all. The Huskies’ fourth year receiver was reacting to a banner performance in Saskatchewan’s 44-5 season opening win over the Calgary Dinos at McMahon Stadium on Friday night. Perry, who is from Calgary, had five receptions for 128 yards and two touchdowns. The first major came on a 75 yard pass from Mason Nyhus on Huskies’ first play from scrimmage.
Returning to Calgary was special for Perry after learning this off-season that his father (John Perry) has cancer and has been given a year to a year and a half to live. John was able to be at McMahon Stadium for Friday’s game. “He was very proud,” Daniel said about his dad. “It was such a great day.”
The Huskies took command of the game when Josh Ewanchyna scored on a 6 yard pass from Nyhus, 1:41 in to the first quarter. Later in the half Ewanchyna left with what appeared to be a leg injury and did not return. “We’ll wait and see what is going on,” said Huskie head coach Scott Flory. “I know he has an MRI coming this weekend. We will cross our fingers and hope for the best. We just don’t know.” Ryker Frank and Ted Kubongo also scored touchdowns for the Huskies.
Saskatchewan’s defense was dominant against Calgary’s inexperienced offensive players. Second year Dino quarterback Matteo Spoletini was 9 for 14 yards for 81 yards. He was replaced by another second year quarterback, Daniel Sananes, as the duo combined for just 134 passing yards on the night. Lane Novak and Jonathan Leggett both registered sacks for the Huskies.
