No touchdowns, no problem. Despite being held to its lowest offensive output of the season, the U of S Huskies still found a way to keep an undefeated record in tact with a thrilling 11-10 win over the Regina Rams on Saturday night in front of over 7,000 fans at Mosaic Stadium. 5th year kicker David Solie booted a 32 yard field goal with two seconds left to lift the visitors to victory.

Holder Cam Skinner was asked if there was any additional stress with the game on the line. “I don’t think so”, Skinner said. “The three of us (including long snapper Dayton Black and Solie) are used to it. We do it all the time in practice.” Solie, who was good on 3 of 4 field goal attempts on the night, gave the Huskies their first lead of the game in the final minute of the third quarter. Solie’s 38 yard field goal lifted the Huskies to an 8-7 advantage.

The game stayed that way until the late stages of the fourth quarter when Rams kicker Aldo Galvan capped off a 10 play, 94 yard drive with a 19 yard field goal to give the help the Rams take a 10-8 lead. The Huskies then went to work, with under 2 minutes on the clock, putting a 49 yard drive together, which included a 15 yard by running back Ryker Frank. That set the stage for Solie’s winning kick.

The Rams scored on the first offensive play from scrimmage after recovering their own kick off. D’Sean Mimbs caught a 29 yard pass from Regina quarterback Noah Pelletier. It was the games only touchdown. Pelletier finished the night with 201 yards passing. Saskatchewan quarterback Mason Nyhus went 24 for 36 for 279 yards.

There were many big defensive plays from both sides. Josh White had a sack for the Rams, while teammate Ryder Varga had six tackles. Tanner Reiber had an interception for the Huskies. Saskatchewan’s Carson Bell had at strong game along the defensive line with 2.5 tackles and a break up.

The lowest scoring Rams/Huskies matchup was on September 11th, 2009 when the Huskies edged the Rams 10-9.

The win puts the 3 and 0 Huskies all alone in first place in the Canada West standings while Regina falls in to a second place tie with Alberta at 2 and 1.

The Huskies/Rams contest was the third and final match up “Football Weekend In Saskatchewan” at Mosaic Stadium. The event started with Friday’s Rider loss to Edmonton (26-24). On Saturday afternoon the PFC’s Regina Thunder defeated the Saskatoon Hilltops 23-7.

The Huskies visit the Alberta Golden Bears on Friday, September 23rd, at 7pm at Foote Field.
