HuskieFAN is ready for event-filled weekend

Sep 27, 2022 | 12:30 PM

The September 30th-October 1st weekend is going to be busy for our HuskieFAN broadcasters and contributors. It’s week one of multi-sport broadcasts on the free HuskieFAN app as hockey season gets underway and football continues.

On Friday night the University of Saskatchewan football team hosts the Manitoba Bisons at 7pm at Griffiths Stadium. The Huskies, which last had a 5 and 0 season in 2006, are the number two ranked team in the country. It’s a rematch of the 2021 Hardy Cup game. Saskatchewan cruised to a 45-17 win to claim the Canada West title.

Expect 2 and 2 Manitoba to run the football. The Bisons rushed for 352 yards and scored five touchdowns on the ground in a 46-4 win over Calgary in week four of the season.

Greg Campbell and Matt Morrison will have the play-by-play on the HuskieFAN app and HuskieFAN.ca starting at 6:50pm on Friday night.

The Huskie men’s hockey team, with promoted interim head coach Brandin Cote, hosts the Trinity Western Spartans at 7:30pm on Friday September 30th and at 7pm on Saturday October 1st at Merlis Belsher Place.

Cote has a solid veteran group of players including fourth year defensemen Connor Hobbs and Evan Fiala. Newcomers Liam Keeler and Cam Zimmerman add a new dimension of speed up the middle that the coaching staff is excited about.

The Huskies won 13 of 20 games last season before being eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.

Derek Craddock and Wray Morrison will have the play-by-play on the HuskieFAN app and HuskieFAN.ca starting at 7:20pm on Friday night, and 6:50pm on Saturday night.

The University of Saskatchewan’s women’s hockey team opens its Canada West season in Langley to face the Trinity Western Spartans for Friday and Saturday night games.

The Huskies have a number of returnees who gained valuable experience from last season’s trip to the USports women’s championships in Charlottetown, including fourth year goaltender Camryn Drever. The Edmonton product had four shutouts last season including one against Brock in the first game of the national championships.

Ryan Flaherty will have the play-by-play on the HuskieFAN app and HuskieFAN.ca starting at 7:50pm, both on Friday and Saturday.
