The Huskies women’s hockey team is coming home with a split after defeating the Trinity Western Spartans 3-0 on Saturday night in Langley, BC.

The Dogs dropped their season opener 2-1 to the Spartans but their starting goaltender in the rematch ensured they did not suffer back-to-back losses.

In her first start of the season, Colby Wilson made 28 saves to earn the shutout, the third of her Huskies career.

“I think we all took the time to reflect on yesterday and came back today with a better mentality and more will to win so it felt pretty awesome,” Wilson said.

Just like Friday’s game, the teams played a scoreless first period, and just like on Friday, the Huskies opened the scoring in the second. However unlike Friday, when they went 0/8 on the power play, Kara Kondrat made good on the Dogs’ first advantage of the night, putting a rebound past Spartans goaltender Kate Fawcett at 7:57 of the middle frame.

Kondrat’s first goal of the season would stand as the winner but the Huskies provided their goaltender with some insurance in the third. Kondrat started the play with a pass behind the goal to Kennedy Brown, who tried to jam the puck into the net. Fawcett made the save but the puck popped into the slot and Bronwyn Boucher wasted no time firing home her first goal of the season.

Then with exactly seven minutes left in the third, after a faceoff win in the Spartans zone, Emily Holmes rifled a shot from the top of the right circle that ricocheted off the far post and in to make it 3-0. Huskies rookie Taylor Wilkinson drew an assist on the goal for her first U SPORTS point.

“Trinity’s in their second year in the league and they’re a way better team and I think this is how it’s going to be every weekend,” head coach Steve Kook said. “That’s why I thought it was so important to play the way we did today. It almost felt like playoff hockey in game two.”

Saskatchewan outshot Trinity Western 31-28 on the night.

With the win the Dogs improve to 1-1 on the season. They will now play their next two series at Merlis Belsher Place, starting with their home opener next Friday against the University of Calgary Dinos.
