Kennedy Brown was the “Caped Crusader” on Friday night as the Huskie women’s hockey team defeated the Calgary Dinos 2-1 in an overtime thriller at Merlis Belsher Place. The fourth year forward from Okotoks, Alberta scored the game winner at the 4:25 mark of the first overtime period. “It’s a tradition that the player of the game wear the cape”, Brown proudly said…decked out in green.

Brown was quick to credit her teammates for their role in the winning goal. “I saw Kara (Kondrat) driving hard to the net”, said Brown. “She made a beautiful toe drag, and I just drove the net. I knew she was going to put it somewhere good.” Brown now has two points in three games, after registering an assist last weekend in a 3-0 shut out over Trinity Western in Langley.

3rd year Huskie Kate Ball opened the scoring on a power play at the 4:27 of the second period. Calgary tied the game with 1:25 remaining in the middle frame when Saskatoon product Sydney Mercier scored for the Dinos.

Calgary attempted to use their size to their advantage, but the Huskies powered through when they could in open ice. “We needed to find a way to keep them moving”, said Saskatchewan head coach Steve Kook. “When we played well, I thought we did that.” The Huskies outshot the Dinos 34-25. Camryn Drever made 24 saves in the Huskie net.

University of Saskatchewan players had been looking forward to the home opener for some time. “There’s nothing like playing in your own rink”, said Brown. “Even something as little as picking the music that plays when we got on the ice. Those little things contribute to the energy that we feel.”

There were some tense moments in the second period when 4th year Huskie, Sophie Lalor, was down on the ice for an extended period of time with an injury. Kook didn’t have a detailed update after the game. “I don’t know yet”, he said. “I don’t think she’ll be in the line up tomorrow. It looked like a shoulder, but I don’t know.” Calgary’s Rebecca Clarke was given a five minute major for a check from behind, and a game misconduct.

The 2 and 1 Huskies host the Dinos again on Saturday night at 7:00pm at Merlis Belsher Place. The game can be heard on the free HuskieFAN app.
