The goalies were the stars in overtime game at Merlis Belsher Place
Hockey fans at Merlis Belsher Place were treated to a phenomenal goaltending display on Saturday night as the Calgary Dinos defeated the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 1-0 in double overtime in Canada West women’s hockey. Calgary third year goalie Gabriella Durante made 32 stops, including 10 in the third period. Durante played in both games of the weekend series in Saskatoon. On Friday she also made 32 saves in a 2-1 overtime loss.
2nd year Huskies’ goaltender Colby Wilson made 29 stops, before Elizabeth Lang buried the game winning goal at the 2:13 mark of the second overtime period. “I felt pretty good”, said Wilson. “I’m definitely starting to learn to trust the things I do in practice.” Despite the defeat she had a positive take on the weekend that was. “Obviously it would have been nice to get two points, but we got one and we got two yesterday. That’s better than nothing.”
Huskie head coach Steve Kook liked his team’s game on Saturday in the overtime loss as compared to Friday’s game..a 2-1 overtime win over the Dinos “I thought we were better tonight”, Kook said. “Better as a crew.” On the topic of goaltending Kook said “Four outings and four good goalie performances, so that’s promising.” (4th year goaltender Camryn Drever has an overtime win and a loss so far this season.)
Both teams were 0 for 6 on the power play in what was, at times, a wide open hockey game. The Huskies took three of the final four penalties in the contest, including one in overtime. Kook did express his concern about some of the penalty calls in the game. “In a two referee system you can’t have one with a different standard than the other.”
