Bears pull out OT thriller

Huskies earn 3 of 4 points against archrival

Huskie head coach Brandin Cote expected the Alberta Golden Bears to play hard on Saturday, following a three goal loss to Saskatchewan the night prior, and he was right. The Bears beat Saskatchewan 2-1 in overtime to salvage a split in their highly anticipated Canada West series at Merlis Belsher Place.

One minute in to 4 on 4 overtime, second year forward Tyler Preziuso entered the Huskies zone with speed and snapped a shot past Huskie goaltender Roddy Ross. Cote tipped his hat to Preziuso’s effort after the game. “We went right at him, he made a good move and made a good shot.”

3rd year forward Jared Dmytriw helped Saskatchewan to a 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal midway through the second period on a bad Golden Bear turnover. However, Alberta responded at the 6:14 mark of the final period when Jakin Smallwood scored to force overtime.

Result aside, Cote was pleased with what he saw in the series finale. “I thought we dominated them for the most part when you look at the scoring chances.” Because of the Friday win and Saturday overtime loss, the Huskies are now tied with the Golden Bears for top spot in the Canada West standings with 13 points. “To come in here and get 3 out 4 (points) against them, we’re pretty proud of that. I thought we carried the play against a really good team.”

Both goaltenders were solid in a game that featured an even amount of shots. Both Alberta’s Ethan Kruger and Saskatchewan’s Roddy Ross made 24 saves. “Roddy made some very big saves, but their goalie played well too”, said Cote.

Alberta and Saskatchewan each went 0 for 4 on the power play. The Huskies entered the weekend with the best penalty kill percentage in the conference and that unit was solid again on Saturday. In the third period, Saskatchewan was forced to kill off a four minute penalty to Liam Keller on a slough foot call. “I thought our special teams were fine”, said Cote. “We had some good looks on the power play, we just weren’t as sharp.” (In Friday’s 5-2 win, the Huskies were 2 for 4 with the man advantage.)

The Huskies have a bye next weekend, before a November 4th-5th home and home series with the Regina Cougars. Friday’s game is in Regina, Saturday’s contest is at Merlis Belsher Place at 7pm.
