One play. That’s all a game comes down to sometimes. Granted, coaches, players, and fans alike will go back to multiple events over the course of a game that may or may not have led to that particular moment in time.

Regardless, the Saskatchewan Huskies had a chance on the final play of the game to tie the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds 35 apiece on the 17 yard line. Mason Nyhus and company got the look they wanted, a corner route in the back of the end zone to Caleb Morin. The throw was on target, the catch was initially made, but as Morin hit the turf between two defenders, the ball popped out.

One thud later the T-Birds, on seniors’ day, stormed the field, capping off a wild Saturday afternoon at Thunderbird Stadium, as UBC defeated Saskatchewan 35-29.

Isiah Knight, the league’s leading rushing, had two consecutive screen passes, the first being 45 yards, and the second 33 yards, being caught for touchdowns to give the home side a 14-0 early on. Both teams traded blows, with UBC clinging to a three point lead at halftime. No scoring in the third quarter led to an entertaining fourth, where UBC scored 13 straight points in the final 2:15 of the contest to walk away with the win.

Mason Nyhus, and the Huskies offence, who moved the ball 71 yards down the field with 44 seconds to go.However, Saturday’s storybook ending, and a 7-0 start to the season, was not in the long-term cards.

The fifth-year Regina product threw for 441 yards and three touchdowns. Daniel Wiebe, his go-to target on the afternoon, hauled in six receptions for 133 yards, including a 73-yard score in the first quarter. Rhett Vavra had 86 yards and a touchdown on six catches, Danie Perry caught a team-high eight balls for 84 yards, and Caleb Morin had 73 yards and his first career touchdown.

For head coach Scott Flory, the Huskies’ performance overall was not characteristic. “We’ve got to start fast and finish strong…we’ve got to find a way at the end of games to close things out.” Flory also pointed out a lot of plays came simply down to the Huskies not doing their individual jobs.

On the other side, Derek Engel stepped in for Garrett Rooker, who got hurt in the first quarter, and steadied the ship for the home side, completing 55% of his passes for 160 yards and two touchdowns through the air. Blake Nill and his staff have to be elated by the performance of running back Isaiah Knight, who came into the content leading all Canada West players in rushing yards. The skilled back had 231 yards from scrimmage, including a touchdown and 151 yards on the ground.

The win ensures that UBC will take on the Regina Rams in the Hardy Cup semi final at Mosaic Stadium.

Meanwhile, Scott Flory and his squad will close out the regular season at home next Saturday at Girffiths against the Calgary Dinos. Their opponent is to be determined, with a winner-take-all matchup next week between the Manitoba Bisons and Alberta Golden Bears.
