Just one HuskieFAN broadcast this weekend

Dinos at Huskies in regular season football finale

Oct 24, 2022 | 2:54 PM

There is just one broadcast on the free HuskieFAN app and HuskieFAN.ca this weekend, and it’s from Griffiths Stadium. The 6 and 1 Huskie football team wraps up its regular season on Saturday against the 1 and 6 Calgary Dinos at 1pm. (The Huskie hockey teams have a bye for the October 28-29 weekend.)

Saskatchewan pounded Calgary 44-5 back on September 2nd, during week one of the season. Mason Nyhus had over 400 yards in passing in the victory. Huskie receiver Daniel Perry had 128 yards and two touchdown catches in his hometown of Calgary. Saskatchewan’s defense had two sacks and held the Dinos to less than 250 yards in total offense.

The Huskies’ 2022 win streak was snapped last weekend in Vancouver as the UBC Thunderbirds defeated the Huskies 35-29. UBC jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead on touchdown catches from Isiah Knight. Saskatchewan did dig out to take the lead in the fourth quarter on a Rhett Vavra touchdown catch, however UBC rallied with 13 fourth quarter points. Shemar McBean found the endzone on an 18 yard pass from Derek Engel to tie the game. The Thunderbirds, then, put themselves in position for two Kieran Flannery-Fleck field goals in the final minute and a half of the fourth quarter.

Saskatchewan will be using the season finale to make some corrections, with the playoffs right around the corner. Following Saturday’s loss Huskie head coach Scott Flory said, “That wasn’t us.” While Flory pointed to his team’s inability to tackle in the early going of the game against the Thunderbirds, one gets the sense he’s looking for a better effort in all phases of his football team. “We’ve got to start fast and finish strong”, Flory said. “There is just no excuses.”

The Dinos’ lone win of the season came on October 15th…a 24-11 win over Alberta. Calgary lost to Regina 30-7 last Saturday. After falling to UBC, Saskatchewan’s coaching staff is taking nothing for granted. “We’ve got to be better, bottom line”, said Flory.

Other October 25th Canada West football games have (4-3) UBC in (2-5) Alberta, while (3-4) Manitoba visits (5-2) Regina. The Huskies have secured top spot in the Canada West standings and will host the fourth place team in the Hardy Cup semi-finals on Saturday, November 5th. The 3rd place team will visit the Regina Rams in the other final four match-up.

Wray Morrison and Matt Morrison will have the play by play of Saturday’s Dinos/Huskies football game starting at 12:50pm on the HuskieFAN app, and HuskieFAN.ca
