Huskie men’s hockey team enters bye weekend in a tie for first in Canada West

The Huskie men’s hockey team enters a bye weekend sitting in a first place tie in the Canada West men’s hockey standings. The Huskies earned three of four points following a 5-2 victory and a 2-1 overtime loss to the Alberta Golden Bears on the October 21-22 weekend.

Both the Huskies and Bears have 13 points. While the Huskies rest up, Alberta hosts the 1-4-1 Regina Cougars this Friday and Saturday.

Saskatchewan head coach Brandin Cote says that the effort against Alberta could help build momentum for the rest of the season. “I think it was a really good morale boost”, Cote said. “This weekend was verification that when we play right, we are a really good team.”

When asked if the bye comes at a good time for the Huskies, 8 games in to the 28 game schedule, Cote says it does. “There are some nagging injuries”, he said. “When we come back, we should be at full health moving forward.”

Last season the Huskies won 3 of 4 against the Cougars, but suffered a 7-4 loss to Regina on January 14th. Saskatchewan’s coaching staff will be looking to keep intensity up during the bye week to be properly prepared for Novemer 4th/5th games against the Cougars. “Every point matters”, said Cote. “We know from experience. We let a few of those slip away.” (last season)

The November 4th matchup between the Cougars and Huskies is in Regina. The November 5th contest starts at 7pm at Merlis Belsher Place. One of Cote’s final messages was, “No better opponent than a provincial rival to get things going again.”
