Nyhus sets Huskie football record

Oct 29, 2022 | 6:32 PM

It’s playoff time in Canada West football! The Huskies host the Manitoba Bisons on Saturday, November 5th in the first Hardy Cup semi-final of the day. Saskatchewan capped off a 7 and 1 regular season with a dominant 24-1 win over a young Calgary Dino team at Griffiths Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Mason Nyhus became Saskatchewan’s all time single-season passing leader thanks to a 350 yard day. He broke the school record in the second quarter on an 85 yard touchdown strike to Rhett Vavra. Nyhus passed Kyle Siemens and Steve Bilan in the record books. Nyhus put up 2,803 yards in passing in 2022. (Siemens had a 2,572 yard season in 2017 while Bilan threw for 2,549 yards in 2004.)

The likeable Nyhus was quick to pass on his appreciation to others after setting the record. “I talked to Siemens quite a bit after the game. He’s a good friend,” said Nyhus. “There’s such a rich tradition here at the U of S, especially with the alumni base that is so supportive.”

Vavra had two touchdown catches in the contest. The second was on a 62 yard play in the fourth quarter. Running back Ryker Frank also scored on a 15 yard pass from Nyhus. Defensively John Stoll and Cam Skinner had interceptions while Connor Delahey registered a sack for the Huskies. The Dinos fell to 1 and 7 with the loss.

The Bisons secured the fourth and final Canada West playoff spot with a 44-30 win over Regina at Mosaic Stadium. Breydon Stubbs was a force on the ground with 132 yards and two touchdowns. Manitoba’s fifth year quarterback, Des Catelier, had 314 yards in passing and tossed a pair of touchdown passes to AK Gassama.

Manitoba and Saskatchewan met just once in the 2022 regular season, with the Huskies pulling out a 43-22 win. The Huskies began the September 30th game with a 102 yard touchdown return from Ted Kubongo and closed it out with a 17 point fourth quarter. Huskie linebacker Nick Wiebe suggested that there are no guarantees when facing the 4 and 4 Bisons in the upcoming playoffs. “Every team is zero and zero”, said Wiebe. “One bad quarter can seal your fate. We know what we have to do.”

Saturday’s Bison/Huskie semi-final can be heard on the HuskieFAN app starting at 12:50 with Greg Campbell and Matt Morrison.

UBC visits Regina at 4pm in the other November 5th Canada West semi final. The Rams defeated the Thunderbirds 21-13 back on September 23rd.
