Basketball season begins

HuskieFAN broadcast crews will be busy on the November 4th and 5th weekend.

The Hardy Cup semi-finals are set for Saturday. The Huskies host Manitoba at 1pm at Griffiths Stadium.

Following a bye the Huskie men’s hockey team is in Regina on Friday night before hosting the Cougars on Saturday night at 7pm at Merlis Belsher Place.

The women’s hockey team hosts the Cougars on Friday night at 7pm at Merlis Belser Place before making the trek to the Co-operators Centre for the second game of the home and home series in Regina.

Elsewhere on campus

The Huskie basketball teams open the Canada West conference season on November 4th and 5th against the Mount Royal Cougars.

Saskatchewan`s men`s coach, Jamie Campbell, is settling in to his new role after being hired on June 30th. Last season`s interim head coach, Chad Jacobson, is serving as lead assistant again this season.

Fourth year guards Alex Dewar and Tyrese Potoma will be among the back court players that the team will be counting on this season. The Huskies also have the valuable experience of advancing to last season`s USports championship game in Edmonton. The Carleton Ravens defeated the Huskies 85-72 for the 2021-22 national title.

The Huskies host Mount Royal on Friday, November 4th at 8pm and Saturday, November 5th at 7pm at the PAC.

The Huskie women`s team is ready to defend it`s 2021-22 Canada West basketball title after defeating Winnipeg for the conference banner last season. 4th year guard Carly Ahlstrom will be among the many leaders on the 2022-23 roster. Ahlstrom had 22 points in the Canada West championship game, and despite losing to Queen`s 62-55 in last season`s USports championships in Kingston, the Calgary product had 29 points in that contest. Ahlstrom was sixth in the conference, averaging 17.1 points per game last season.

Guard Libby Epoch and forward Summer Masikewich did graduate from the program however coach Lisa Thomaidis has a number of players who have played in big games such as Ahlstrom and second year guards Gage Grassick and Tea DeMong.

The Huskies host Mount Royal on Friday November 4th at 6pm and Saturday, November 5th at 5pm at the PAC.

Saskatchewan`s volleyball teams are in Abbotsford to take on Fraser Valley this weekend. The Huskie women`s team is 2 and 2 following a straight set win over MacEwan at the PAC last Saturday. The men`s team has a 3 and 1 record following a weekend sweep over the Griffins.

The Huskie cross country teams returned from Abbotsford, BC..the site of the Canada West championships. Saskatchewan`s women`s team finished third, the men fourth.

The U of S soccer teams were eliminated in quarter-final competition on the weekend. UBC defeated the Huskie men`s team 4-2. Saskatchewan`s women`s team suffered a 3-0 defeat to Trinity Western.
