Mason Nyhus named Canada West football player of the year

Nov 10, 2022 | 3:54 PM

Saskatchewan Huskie quarterback Mason Nyhus was named the Canada West football player of the year on Thursday following a record breaking 2022 regular season. Nyhus threw for 2,759 yards surpassing Kyle Siemens’ mark of 2,572, set back in 2017.

Nyhus was a key contributor to the team’s 7 and 1 regular season record and first place finish in the standings. “Mason Nyhus is a special young man”, stated head coach Scott Flory. Nyhus and his Huskie teammates are hosting the Hardy Cup for a second straight season. The UBC Thunderbirds visit Griffiths Stadium on Saturday at 1:00 for the 2022 league title.

The two teams split a pair of regular season meetings. On September 9th, the Huskies posted a 29-10 win over UBC at Griffiths Stadium. On October 22nd, the Thunderbirds outscored Saskatchewan 35-29 in Vancouver.

Flory says Nyhus and company respect UBC’s defense. “They’ve got athletes, and they just say ‘beat us’”. Last week, in Regina, UBC held the 5 and 3 Regina Rams to just 14 points. Thunderbirds’ 4th year defensive lineman Lake Korte-Moore has five sacks this season and was second in the conference in tackles for loss in the 2022 regular season.

Scott Flory chatted with HuskieFAN’s Wray Morrison on the Hardy Cup edition of The Coach’s Show.
