The Huskie women’s hockey team reeled off a fourth straight win on Saturday night, defeating the MacEwan Griffins 1-0 at Merlis Belsher Place. Kennedy Brown tipped in a Kendra Zuchotzki shot with 4:54 remaining in the first period, and Saskatchewan was able to make the power play goal stand up as the winner.

Even though the Huskies opened the series with a 5-2 win over the Griffins on Friday night, U of S coach Steve Kook was happier with his team’s play on Saturday. “We played the right way”, Kook said. We got a little scrambly in the second period but played the right way in the third again.”

Saskatchewan’s power play has been impressive during the win streak. The Huskies are 6 for 22 in four straight wins over the Regina Cougars and MacEwan Griffins. The power play is one of many things that has come together in recent games. “The lines are rolling good together”, said second year forward Paris Oleksyn. “We have a very good connection.”

Huskie goaltender Camryn Drever had to make just 10 stops to record the shut out. Kook credits his blueliners for MacEwan’s limited chances. “I thought our defense played really well tonight. They kept putting pucks behind us, and we kept getting there first.”

Saskatchewan’s transition game from defense to offense was much improved from Friday night. While the score was close, the Huskies dominated in possession time and in chances, outshooting the Griffins 29-10. “We weren’t panicked at all”, Oleksyn said. “We were in their end more than our end. We needed to capitalize on keeping the puck down low and I think we cleaned up that area very well.”

The Huskies trail Alberta by three points for third place in the Canada West standings. The top four teams in the conference host playoffs games, with the third and fourth place teams hosting the sixth and fifth place teams in the first round. Being at home for playoff hockey goal for the Huskies. “We just have to keep getting points if we want to host a playoff game”, said Kook.

The Huskies host the first place Mount Royal Cougars November 19th and 20th at Merlis Belsher Place. Both games start at 7:00 and can be heard on the free HuskieFAN app.
