Huskies shutout Cougars for fifth straight win

Once again, one goal was all the Huskie Women’s Hockey team needed after shutting out the Mount Royal Cougars on Friday.

Sophie Lalor had the only goal for the Huskies late in the first period while Camryn Drever stopped all 30 shots she faced in a 1-0 win.

It’s the second straight game the Huskies have won by that score after blanking the MacEwan Griffins 1-0 last weekend.

The game was close throughout the first period with each team registering an equal amount of shots. Despite some early chances from both teams, neither could break the ice.

That is until the 19:20 mark of the opening frame when Lalor took a pass and snuck the backhand behind Cougras goalie Kaitlyn Ross.

“I think I got it right away and I thought, “I should probably shoot,” said Lalor. “She (goalie) slid over and I saw she was too far gone so I brought it back the other way.”

Although they were firing from every angle including some point blank shots late in the third period, the Cougars had no answer for Drever and couldn’t muster a goal despite outshooting the Huskies through most of the game.

Lalor praised Drever’s performance calling her and fellow goalie Colby Wilson the backbone of the team

“They keep us in every single game,” she said. “We wouldn’t be the team we are without them.”

Meanwhile, Head Coach Steve Kook praised not only Drever but the entire team for the performance, especially the penalty kill.

“That whole second period we killed three in a row,” he said. “We have a very good PK, it’s number one in the conference. They stood their line, did a very good job of holding their blue line and just didn’t give them a whole lot of second shots.”

The Huskies were down a player three times in the game but didn’t allow a goal. On the other hand, the team had five powerplays but didn’t score on either advantage.

These two teams will meet in a grudgematch at Merlis Belcher Place on Saturday. Kook said they just have to keep doing what they’re doing.

“It’s easy to get up emotionally with these guys because they’re a very good team, we played them in the playoffs,” he said. “We just got to make sure our bodies are ready to go.”

The Huskies will look to sweep the weekend series and collect their sixth straight win when they face off with the Cougars again at 5 p.m. Saturday.
