Saskatchewan finishes with four road games before the Christmas break.
The Huskie women’s hockey team played their final home games of the 2022 calendar year on the November 18-19 weekend. Saskatchewan defeated Mount Royal 1-0 on Friday night, before watching a five game win streak come to an end on Saturday in a 1-0 loss to the Cougars at Merlis Belsher Place. The Huskies are a point back of Alberta for third spot in the Canada West standings.
“I thought there was a little bit of carry over from the Canada West semi-finals”, said head coach Steve Kook. (Saskatchewan defeated Mount Royal in two straight games during Iast season’s Canada West final four playoff match up.) “It was good. I thought that both teams weren’t giving up many opportunities either way.”
Fourth year goaltender Camryn Drever was named the Canada West player of the week after making 55 saves in the two games, including 31 stops in the 1-0 shutout on Friday. “I thought we played well in front of her for two and a half periods, then we gave up some outstanding chances and had some defensive zone lapses”, Kook said. “She (Drever) kept us in there, or it would have been 3-1 the other way.”
The Huskies finish up the 2022 portion of their schedule with road games in Winnipeg and Calgary against the Bisons and Dinos. When asked what the priority is for the team before the Christmas break, Kook said, “Just points right now.” Kook also admitted that the break ahead is coming at a good time. “We are at a time when there is mid-terms and fatigue. We’ve got to get out of here energized and get some points out of it.
