The U of S Huskies have made their final preparations and now rest up for Saturday’s Vanier Cup contest against the Laval Rouge et Or in London, Ontario. Following a team breakfast and positional meetings, the Huskies made their way to Western Alumni Stadium for a short final walk through on Friday.

Quarterback Mason Nyhus was asked about the anticipation of returning to the Canadian football championship game. “You’ve kind of been thinking about this moment for the last year.” (The Western Mustangs defeated the Huskies 27-21 in Quebec City last season.) The experience of the 2021 Vanier Cup will be valuable on Saturday according to Nyhus. “It feels like a normal road week”, Nyhus said. “You notice a different feel than last year.”

The Huskies will attempt to be methodical offensively against a solid Rouge et Or defense that features first team all Canadians Christophe Beaulieu (DB) and Jean-William Rouleau (DL). “We’ve got to be disciplined and stay ahead of the sticks”, Nyhus said. “First down production is huge. You don’t want to be second and long on these guys. When we get in to the red zone we have to cash in.”

Saskatchewan’s defense goes against a Rouge et Or team that puts the ball in the air 80% of the time during the 2022 season. However, in last weeks’ 27-20 Laval win over the Western Mustangs in the Mitchell Bowl, Rouge et Or running back Kalenga Muganda rushed for over 170 yards and helped his team overcome a 17-0 deficit.

Defensive coordinator Warren Muzika had this take on Laval’s offense. “They have an all-Canadian quarterback (Armaud Desjardins), a Hec Crighton receiver, (Kevin Mital) and two all-Canadian o-lineman. They are highly talented across the board.”

The Huskies were shut out of Thursday’s USports football major awards. Receiver Daniel Perry was the only Huskie to be named a first team All-Canadian, while Nyhus, defensive back Charlie Ringland and kicker David Solie were named to the second All-Canadian team. “I don’t think the league or the country has realized how hard these kids (the Huskies) have worked”, Muzika said. When asked if he thought being overlooked bothered the team, he responded, “These kids really care about each other and just want to win for each other. They aren’t really motivated by that external stuff.”
